Heads up ⬇️⬇️

There will be a large public safety presence at and around the Chesterfield County Airport on Saturday, October 17th for a scheduled drill. Do not be alarmed by the large public safety presence.

Heads up!! If you live, work, or drive by the Chesterfield County Airport this weekend, you will see a large presence of public safety officials, including fire and police. But… it’s all a drill!

On Saturday, Chesterfield Fire and EMS is participating in the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) exercise. The drill, which is held once every three years, simulates a large emergency, where first responders practice receiving patients involved in an evacuation. That includes providing medical care and moving them to hospitals or other facilities.

The exercise is expected to run for most of the day on Saturday, so do not be alarmed by the large presence of first responders.

Last week, the Chesterfield Emergency Management team attended the Virginia Unified Readiness Summit. Nearly 1,000 participants from more than 30 different disciplines gathered at Richmond Raceway for Virginia’s first statewide summit of its kind—focused on strengthening how agencies and organizations work together before, during, and after emergencies.

We were proud to join partners from across the Commonwealth in these important conversations and continue our work toward a stronger, more resilient Chesterfield community. 💪🌟

Last week, Emergency Management, in partnership with the Chesterfield Department of Social Services, supported a training for the Shelter Managers. The session included a panel discussion featuring representatives from Mental Health, the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), the Red Cross, Emergency Management, and the Sheriff’s Office.

Participants then rolled up their sleeves for hands‑on practice, including setting up dormitory spaces, managing registration, and learning the basics of disaster psychology.

We’re grateful to everyone who participated and for the continued collaboration that helps keep our community prepared! 💪🌟

Heads up, ! 🌧️ Widespread rainfall is expected this weekend, which may lead to localized flooding in low‑lying areas. Give yourself extra travel time, check drainage around your home, and stay alert for weather updates. Plan accordingly and stay safe!

Tropical moisture associated with the remnants of Hurricane Isaias will bring widespread rainfall Saturday night through Sunday. Most of the area should see 1 to 2 inches of rain while southeast VA and northeast NC could see up to 3+ inches.

Our Emergency Management Coordinator, Jessica Winter, recently presented at the Police Command Excellence program. This was our first opportunity to instruct a session within this outstanding program, and we were honored to participate.

The session was designed to frame the National Incident Management System (NIMS), the Incident Command System (ICS), and the broader role of Emergency Management in a way that is meaningful specifically for law enforcement. Strengthening this mutual understanding helps create better collaboration, clearer communication, and stronger support between emergency management and our law enforcement partners.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute and look forward to continued partnership and growth.

One of the key events we attended was the National Preparedness Expo, where we shared helpful preparedness materials, tips, and resources with residents.

If you haven’t already, now is a great time to review your emergency plans, update your kits, and stay connected with local alerts . Preparedness is a year-round effort—let’s keep it going! 💪

One of the best ways to stay ready for emergencies is by building your own preparedness kit. A well-stocked kit can make all the difference when the unexpected happens.

Think about including essentials like:
💧 Water & non‑perishable food
🔦 Flashlights & extra batteries
🧰 First-aid supplies
📃 Medications & important documents
🐈 Comfort items for kids or pets
🙌 And anything unique to your family’s needs

Having a checklist with these supplies helps ensure your household and community are prepared. Taking a little time now can bring a lot of peace of mind later. Let’s get prepared together! 💪✨
