As part of our ongoing process of evaluating and improving the services we provide to our community, we are conducting a thorough review of the response following the Calvert Street block party on August 15, 2026.
As I have stated previously, the safety of our community is always our highest priority. I also understand the questions and concerns that have been raised regarding the size and nature of the police response. In retrospect, the number of law enforcement personnel on the scene exceeded the immediate need. I also recognize that the presence of the tactical vehicle and additional support units created an appearance that was unsettling to many members of our community.
I take responsibility for those decisions and concerns, and I look forward to working collaboratively with our community, including the New Shore Community Bridge Alliance, strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and establish a positive path forward.
I want to be equally clear that neither I nor the Chestertown Police Department condone hatred, harassment, or ill will directed toward anyone who has spoken out or expressed opposition to our response to the event. Constructive criticism and community feedback are important, and we will use that feedback to improve our planning and response to future events. Hatred of any kind has no place in our community.
Rather than opening a forum for debate on social media, I encourage anyone with questions, concerns, or comments to contact me directly at [email protected].
Our community is best served when we listen to one another, acknowledge where improvements are needed, and work together toward greater understanding and trust.
Respectfully,
Ron Dixon
Chief of Police
