130 miles of shoreline.

The city of Chetek is located in northwestern Wisconsin
in a region known as "Indianhead Country". The original inhabitants of this area were
the Ojibwa Indians. It is said that they
referred to the area as Zhede which was
their name for the pelican. There were
various translations into English until 1872,
when the first post office opened and the
spelling was standardized to "Chetek". We are truly a place for all seasons. You can experience recreational adventure
for all your outdoor interests. Our residents are hospitable and enjoy a
peaceful, safe community in which to work,
play, raise and educate a family. We live life to the fullest and
welcome visitors, new residents and businesses.

Governor Evers approves Lake Chetek Bridge rehabilitation project

Structure to remain open to single lane of traffic; motorists should expect delays

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $2.39 million contract with prime contractor Lunda Construction Co. of Black River Falls for a rehabilitation project on the bridge carrying County D over Lake Chetek in the Barron County city of Chetek. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 3.

Built in 1973, the bridge needs maintenance. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) project is:

Placing a 1.5-inch concrete overlay over the bridge deck
Repairing the concrete sidewalk, bridge piers and parapet
Making joint repairs
Cleaning drainage grates
Painting bridge girders
Milling 2 inches of the existing asphalt pavement on either side of the structure and paving 2 inches of hot-mix asphalt over the roadway
Replacing curb, gutter and sidewalk
Restoring the landscape around the construction site
During construction, the bridge will remain open to a single lane of traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals. Motorists should expect travel delays.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late October.

Per Chief Ambrozitis:
I hope this reaches all the citizens of Chetek. I want to apologize for my actions on Tuesday night at the monthly council meeting. My actions and accusations were very much uncalled for. I want to apologize to Mayor Martin, the council, people watching online, and the people in attendance for my actions. I did not act in a professional manner and I apologize for this. I also want to say that I am not a criminal and did not break any rules or laws in the purchase of the Flock camera system. I bought the system based on good intentions. I also based my decision on the good that they have done in Barron County over the past 5-6 years. I have since looked at the articles that Mr. Hodge has posted. I do understand how you can be upset. Here is my promise to the citizens of Chetek, if I or any member of my department misuses the Flock system in any way, I will be the first to stand by you and hold that officer accountable for his or her actions. I also had a good conversation with a citizen of Chetek that is not in favor of the Flock system and came up with a plan to hold a public meeting (time and place TBD). Hopefully at this meeting we can all have a good discussion concerning the cameras. Please feel free to forward this to Mr. Hodge for I have attempted to contact him with no success, and anybody that I have upset by my actions. It was not my intention at all. Thank you for the opportunity to address my faults.

Ramp from County I to southbound US 53 to close in Barron County
Closure necessary for replacement of nearby Chetek River Bridge
The ramp from County I to southbound US 53 south of Chetek is expected to be closed to traffic on Friday, June 19. The closure is expected to be in place until approximately Oct. 1.
During this closure, southbound US 53 traffic will be detoured on northbound US 53 to US 8, where motorists will exit and then re-enter southbound US 53.
Closure of the ramp is necessary for the replacement of the bridge over the Chetek River, which is southeast of the US 53/County I interchange. The bridge project is part of a multiyear effort that started in 2025 rehabilitating five bridges. Work in 2026 includes replacing the Chetek River Bridge and the decks on bridges carrying southbound US 53 over 20th Street and County I.
