**ANNOUNCEMENT**

Subject: Cottage Foods Regulations and the upcoming "Tamale Act"

We would like to inform the community that current Cottage Foods Regulations do not allow the production or sale of Temperature Control for Safety (TCS) foods--this includes tamales, burritos, tortas, and similar items made in home kitchens. These items may not be made or sold under Cottage Foods until the new regulations take effect on January 1, 2027.

The State has not yet released the final regulations for the updated Cottage Foods program. However, we do know that the new requirements will include:

* Operators must complete an approved food safety course.

* Operators must register all products with the State (this applies to home bakers as well).

* All products must include proper labeling.

*Products may not be transported for more than two hours.

*We will share the final regulations and all required steps for compliance as soon as we receive official guidance from the State.

Thank you for your cooperation and attention as we prepare for these upcoming changes.

INITIAL TEST RESULTS SHOW HIGH LEVELS OF E.COLI IN RIVER - The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said testing revealed high levels of E.coli downstream from a sewage discharge in Pueblo.

The City of Pueblo reported that over 4 million gallons of untreated sewage was leaked into the Arkansas River, caused by a faulty patch to a sewer line.

The spill happened Wednesday morning but wasn’t discovered until Thursday.

The leak was fixed Thursday, but CDPHE is asking the public downstream from the Confluence Lake to avoid water recreation for the time being.

The advisory applies to the Arkansas River from where Fountain Creek enters the river through John Martin Reservoir.

The following areas should avoid the water until Monday, August 31 (however we researched the subject and the long term effects of such contamination, as linked below):

Avondale, Boone, Fowler, Manzanola, Rocky Ford, Swink, La Junta, Las Animas

The department doesn’t believe this will affect drinking water but officials overseeing farms are worried about irrigation water on growing edibles in Southeast Colorado. All farmers have been notified and water will be monitored.

However in Pueblo County, farmers get their water from the lake via the Bessemer Ditch. At least one farm in the county posted on FB this won’t affect them, but they will still be monitored by state officials to ensure the health of their produce. It’s the communities further downstream from the Arkansas River that may be affected.

With temperatures increasing it is important to take care of yourselves and do your best to avoid any heat-related illnesses.

-Drink water or electrolytes
-Take breaks to cool down
-Try to not work alone in the heat, if at all possible, this enables you to watch out for each other and hopefully get help if needed
-Make sure people know where you are working so they can get to you if needed.
-If you start having any of the below symptoms...seek medical treatment!

Colorado already has its first 2 human cases of West Nile for the year. Please be safe, use this resource to help prevent mosquito bites. Remember to wear bug sprays containing DEET, wear protective clothing and remove all sources of standing water if possible.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. At this point the known cases are in the norther part of the state but it's a great opportunity to remind all our friends to be safe!
