Third and fourth graders from schools around the county participated in the Upper Wash*ta Conservation Districtโ€™s annual Natural Resource Day last week. 129 students from Cheyenne, Reydon, Hammon, Sweetwater, and Leedey elementary schools participated in the event held at the Black Kettle Recreation Area on October 7th.
Instructors with the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Roger Mills OSU Extension, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Oklahoma Game Wardens, Roger Mills Emergency Management, Roger Mills EMS, and the Upper Wash*ta Conservation District Board of Directors manned eight stations providing education on emergency services, prairie plants & animals, flood control structures, trapping, and more.
Ensuring that things ran smoothly were Tony Tracy, UWCD chairman; Rodney Unruh, UWCD Vice Chair; Joshua Haven, UWCD Secretary/Treasurer; Carl Manske, UWCD Director; Dustin Burrows, North Fork of Red River Conservation District; Avery Hoggard, NRCS; Hope Porter, UWCD Field Employee; Tracey York, UWCD Watershed Aide; and Katy Elliott, UWCD District Manager.
The District would like to thank Security State Bank for the generous donation, which provided lunch and water for the day. We appreciate each instructor and volunteer who worked to make the day a success, and we would like to thank the teachers, helpers, and students for joining us.

Emergency Drought Program Has Been Extended

The Upper Wash*ta Conservation District will be taking applications for the Emergency Drought Cost Share program from 8:30 am on October 5, 2026, through October 30, 2026.

This is an extension of the current emergency program, so if a producer was fully funded during the March application period or later as an alternate when funding became available, they are not eligible to re-apply. Approved alternate applications that have not been fully funded will expire at midnight on October 4, 2026, and those producers must re-apply for the new funding.

The program provides cost share assistance (80% cost share rate with a $7500 maximum payment) on water wells, pumping plants, pipelines, pasture taps, heavy use area protection, pond cleanouts, and watering facilities. This program is retroactive to July 15, 2026, so if you have installed an approved practice since that date, you may qualify for financial assistance.

The new program deadlines are December 31, 2026, for pond cleanouts and July 1, 2027, for all other practices.

This program is a first come, first served funding process. Applications are not considered complete without GPS coordinates of the desired installation location. Approval and funding are contingent on a field visit and visual inspection to determine need.

Applications are available from the districtโ€™s office at 301 E. Broadway in Cheyenne, or you can download one from the Oklahoma Conservation Commissionโ€™s website. If you canโ€™t make it to the office, you can request one be emailed, but note that is subject to staff availability. There may be delays in fulfilling your request and subsequently delay application approval. For inquiries, call Katy at (580) 497-3413 and leave a message if unavailable. Your call will be returned as soon as possible.

*Calling the USDA's new main line will NOT connect you to the District, even though it is a menu option. Please call the local number directly for assistance.

We're a little late posting, but the National Park Service's Junior Ranger Day was August 22nd, and the district was invited to participate at our local Wash*ta Battlefield National Historic Site. Hope Porter and Katy Elliott, along with their volunteer Kash Rose, enjoyed sharing about the precious resource, water. Children of all ages were able to explore the "Journey of a Drop" and build bracelets representing their particular drop's travel. It was a great day, and we look forward to next year's event.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) continues to put Farmers First through a historic investment in conservation on agricultural lands through USDAโ€™s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) as a result of the conservation funding provided by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act.

While NRCS accepts applications year-round, interested agricultural producers in Oklahoma should apply by September 30 to be considered for fiscal year 2027 funding.

Reminder! Phone numbers change on Monday!

Once the change goes into effect, please use our direct number to reach the conservation district, (580) 497-3413.

There's a decent possibility that choosing our extension from the new main line number will NOT actually get you to our office.
