Alderman Chico, don’t be a Grinch! Support the Protect Chicago Budget!

Dear Alderman Chico,
We, the undersigned residents and community members of the 10th Ward, are deeply concerned that you signed on to a budget proposal last week that would raise garbage fees and other cost of living increases on working class Chicagoans instead of taxing billionaire-owned corporations who can afford to pay more.
Despite numerous emails, calls, and visits to your office from teachers, parents, and community members, your continued refusal to support taxing rich corporations like Google, McDonalds, and Tesla that just received billions in federal tax cuts in favor of increased costs for economically vulnerable families in our ward raises questions about where your priorities lie.
We demand that you take the following actions to protect the interests of working class residents in the city budget:
Remove your name from any budget proposal that includes an increase to garbage fees, home delivery fees, and other cost of living increases for Chicago residents.
Vote for a budget that allocates the entire TIF surplus to restore the budget for Chicago Public Schools to avoid the loss of $15 million and over 200 school staff layoffs in our ward alone.
Refuse to support any budget proposal that would cut youth summer jobs and other vital violence disrupting programs that have made our communities safer.
Publicly express your commitment to tax ultra-wealthy corporations by re-adopting the corporate head tax so these companies can fund our city that they profit from.
As our Alderman, your commitments and legislative actions have a direct impact on our daily lives. We believe that transparency is a fundamental part of public service, and that your office shares this value. We welcome any additional opportunity for an in-person or virtual community meeting to discuss this matter further.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue. We look forward to your timely response.
Signed,
United Neighbors of the 10th Ward

This week, we delivered a message to Ald. Chico: Working families in our ward should not be asked to pay more while wealthy corporations pay less.
Ald. Chico has supported raising garbage fees and other cost of living increases on residents, while opposing proposals to raise tax revenue from major corporations like Google, Meta, McDonald’s, and even IBM here in the 10th Ward. IBM is receiving over half a billion dollars in public subsidies for Quantum Park.
Residents shouldn’t be the ones asked to cover that gap.
Without the full TIF surplus, CPS schools in the 10th Ward stand to lose $15 million and over 200 school staff positions. Our neighborhood schools already experienced cuts this year. Students need more resources not cuts!
We’re calling for our alder to support budget priorities that:
-Protect our schools from cuts and layoffs
-Fund and expand youth jobs
-Tax the richest corporations, not working families
KEEP CALLING, EMAILING, AND VISITING ALD. CHICO TO TELL HIM TO SUPPORT THE PROTECT CHICAGO BUDGET!

This bill guarantees the right to a free public education up to high school for all children in Illinois regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents. All it needs is the Governor’s signature.
