Today, we honor the enduring legacy of Mayor Harold Washington — a visionary leader, a courageous public servant, and the founding force behind the NFBPA Chicago Chapter.
On November 25, 1987, Chicago lost its first African American mayor, but his impact on our city and on generations of Black public administrators continues to shine as a guiding light.
Mayor Washington championed equity, expanded opportunity, and believed deeply in the brilliance and capacity of Black leaders in government. His commitment to inclusive leadership laid the foundation for our chapter’s mission: to develop, support, and elevate Black public professionals who drive meaningful change in their communities.
As we commemorate his life and leadership, we reaffirm our dedication to carrying his vision forward — advancing excellence in public administration, cultivating leaders who serve with integrity, and ensuring that the doors he opened remain open for all who follow.
Mayor Washington’s legacy is not just history — it is our mandate. We honor him today and every day through our service, our advocacy, and our commitment to a stronger, more equitable Chicago.

The NFBPA Chicago Chapter extends deep gratitude to all veterans this Veterans Day.
We stand proudly in recognition of the generations of African American veterans—courageous patriots who have fought and sacrificed for our nation, often in the face of prejudice. Their enduring spirit and commitment to service is a bedrock of our community and our democracy.
We owe you a debt that can never be fully repaid. Thank you.
