Today we mourn the loss of a true legend, Leader Barbara Flynn Currie. I know that I stand on the foundation Barbara built over her historic 40-year career. As an IWIL alumna, I am honored to have had her as a mentor and a model for what it means to lead with integrity. BFC led with a sharp mind and a kind heart, proving that optimism is the most powerful tool in politics. My thoughts are with her family, her former colleagues, and the countless Illinoisans whose lives are better because of her service.

One of my favorite parts about being in Springfield is when advocacy groups and nonprofits visit the Capitol to share their vision for a better Illinois. This week, I met with organizations like the Tie Tuesday Foundation, which is doing amazing work cultivating professional responsibility, confidence, and goal-oriented mindsets among young men. I also chatted with Autism Speaks, the nation’s largest autism research and awareness organization, to discuss their efforts for outreach activities that support so many of our families. Whether you are here to advocate for a cause or simply stopping by for a tour of this historic building, your presence reminds us who we serve.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day where we honor the memory of the six million Jews and the millions of others systematically murdered by the N**i regime.
We remember the darkness of our history not just to mourn but to commit ourselves to never repeating it. Whether it is the rise of antisemitism or the dehumanization of immigrants by the federal government, we must remain vigilant. Today and every day, let us find the courage to confront hate in all its forms and stand up for one another.
