"December 7, 1941 A Date Which Will Live in Infamy"

As we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice today I wanted to talk about my last ship I served on. USS Pearl Harbor (L*D 52) was named for the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec 7th 1941. Every year a Pearl Harbor survivor named Stu Headly would come to my ship to not only talk about his experience on that day and stories but also to remind us (the crew) how important the ship meant to the Navy. Initially, the ship was not supposed to be named Pearl Harbor because of the losses we suffered that day and was considered bad luck but our ships crest , an avenging phoenix, to signify rebirth and our ships motto “Nations battle cry” represents how even though we suffered a huge loss that day, the nation came together as one and rose up and fought rather then be defeated.
