Chicago HIDTA-funded task forces played an integral role in Chicago’s Operation New Dawn.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, the approximately 60-day operation resulted in 179 defendants charged across 140 newly filed federal cases, 305 fugitives apprehended, and 24 children located and safely returned home.

Efforts like Operation New Dawn demonstrate the importance of collaboration, information sharing, and focused enforcement strategies, which are the foundation of the HIDTA Program, in addressing violent crime, fi****ms trafficking, drug trafficking, and other threats to public safety.

Illinois Reports Major Decline in Opioid Overdose Deaths

Chicago HIDTA recognizes the encouraging news that opioid overdose deaths have declined significantly across Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County.

According to a recent report highlighted by the Chicago Sun-Times, opioid overdose deaths in Illinois decreased by 36% from 2023 to 2024, while deaths involving highly potent synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, dropped by 38%. Cook County and Chicago also reported a 37% decline in opioid-related deaths during the same period.

Public health officials and treatment providers point to several possible factors behind the decline, including expanded access to naloxone, increased awareness of fentanyl and xylazine risks, wider use of harm reduction strategies, and better data-driven targeting of prevention resources.

Chicago HIDTA’s Overdose Response Strategy program, commonly referred to as ORS, supports this type of coordinated, data-informed response by bringing together public safety, public health, and community partners to identify overdose trends, share timely information, and support strategies that reduce overdose deaths.

While the decline represents important progress, officials caution that continued investment in prevention, treatment, recovery support, and overdose response remains essential. Fentanyl continues to be involved in a large majority of opioid overdose deaths in Chicago, and overdose deaths continue to disproportionately affect some communities.

Chicago HIDTA remains committed to supporting coordinated public safety and public health strategies, including ORS, that reduce overdose deaths, disrupt drug trafficking, and connect communities with critical resources.

This follows a smaller drop the previous year. A new national report details the decrease, but experts warn the gains in tackling the opioid crisis may be lost amid potential federal funding cuts.
