Today is World Contraception Day.

The road to protecting reproductive freedom starts here. Not in Washington, but in your state legislature. Birth control and abortion access are decisions that belong to patients and their doctors, not politicians, and today is a reminder of everything still worth fighting to protect.

Project 50 exists to fund the state and local organizations doing that fighting, in the states where it matters most.

Tomorrow is World Contraception Day. This week we laid out why birth control and abortion access are part of the same fight: who gets to make decisions about our own bodies.

Contraception and abortion access are both on the line. Share this with someone who needs to see it.

Contraception attacks are already showing up in the states where Project 50 invests.

In Indiana, a 2025 bill meant to expand birth control access for low-income patients was nearly amended to redefine birth control by cutting out condoms, emergency contraception, implants, and IUDs. Medical professionals called it an attack built on anti-science misinformation. It died in committee.

In Oklahoma, a 2024 bill advanced through a House committee that would have banned emergency contraception outright. A state lawmaker warned that, as written, IUDs and Plan B could become inaccessible.

In South Carolina, a personhood bill defined life as beginning at fertilization using a definition of contraception that advocates called medically inaccurate, raising fear that emergency contraception and IUDs could be criminalized. It failed once. Similar language came back this year.

These fights get won or lost in committee rooms and statehouse floors, one hearing at a time. That is exactly where Project 50 funds our state partners to show up.

Birth control access is not as settled as most people assume. The federal Right to Contraception Act, which would guarantee nationwide protection for birth control, has been introduced in Congress but has stalled in committee, with no vote currently scheduled, and has still not become law.

At the state level, several abortion bans use language broad enough that legal advocates have raised real concerns about how it could affect IUDs and emergency contraception. Advocates have spent the years since Roe fell fighting, statehouse by statehouse, to make sure birth control stays protected.

This is not a hypothetical debate. It is playing out in real legislatures, in real votes, right now.

This Saturday is World Contraception Day. All week, we are breaking down how contraception and abortion access are connected.

Nearly 80 percent of Americans believe decisions about pregnancy and birth control should be made by patients and their doctors, not politicians. Yet in state after state, the same laws written to ban abortion are broad enough to raise real questions about birth control too.

Follow along this week as we walk through what is at stake.

Abortion opponents are calling this a victory. The EPA is moving to test drinking water for trace amounts of the abortion pill, after a coordinated campaign from Students for Life, 14 Republican state attorneys general, and 19 members of Congress.

Here is what the science actually says. The FDA studied mifepristone's environmental impact back in 1996 and found no significant impact. The drug wasn't even included in the EPA's last major screening of nearly 700 pharmaceuticals for water contamination. It's taken once, by a small share of the population, in amounts nowhere close to the volume of common medications already in the water supply. This was never about water safety. Medication abortion is now the majority of abortion care in this country.

When a legal pathway to restrict it doesn't exist, opponents are trying to build a new one out of environmental policy instead.

We made it early and you made it possible!

Just 50 days ago we announced that Jennifer Steans and Robin Steans had together pledged to match $100,000 in contributions to Project 50. Soon thereafter Stephanie Morimoto and Fay Clayton each committed to matching a further $50,000, bringing the grand total to $200,000! To ensure these funds would be available this election cycle, we set out to achieve this audacious goal by Friday, September 18.

Well, we crossed the finish line two days early, and raised even more than our $200,000 goal. As of today we are at $232,358.

On behalf of Project 50 and our state partners, we want to thank the Project 50 donors who stepped up to meet this challenge. When pro-choice candidates in these states win on November 3, it will be thanks to an unbeatable combination: your generosity and the wisdom and courage of our state leaders.

Thank you again from Project 50 and our state partners.

Six months ago, support for restoring Missouri's abortion ban had an 11-point lead.
A new poll out last week shows that lead completely gone. Forty three percent now support reinstating the ban, forty four percent oppose it, and thirteen percent are still undecided, well within the margin of error.

That shift is happening while our partner Access MO - Access for all Missourians is doing the hard work on the ground, knocking on doors and having real conversations so voters know exactly what this amendment means before they vote. When voters are informed, we see change.

Races this close get decided by precisely that kind of work, and that is where Project 50's investment goes.

Louisiana's attorney general wants the Fifth Circuit to end telehealth access to the abortion pill everywhere, not just within the state's own borders.

The office argues the FDA's 2023 rule allowing remote prescribing violates state sovereignty and that in-person visits are safer, and has taken to calling providers who mail medication across state lines "out of state abortion pill traffickers."

Meanwhile, clinics like the one in Tucson, Arizona, which only started offering telehealth abortion care this year after a court ruling, say 95 percent of their patients want that option, with most appointments taking under 30 minutes.

If Louisiana's AG wins this case, the damage would not stay contained to Louisiana. It could unwind the option that has let people in the most restrictive states get care without crossing state lines. One lawsuit, in one circuit, could decide access for the whole country, which is exactly why the organizing our partners are doing on the ground matters as much as what happens in court.
