Slightly before midnight I passed SB 248, a bill that provides an opportunity for youthful offenders to have a chance at a constitutional hearing that considers their age at the time of sentencing. Along with Restore Justice I have been working to pass this bill since my first session in 2023. It took 3 years, but we did it!

Legislative Update: HB4890 has passed both chambers and now heads to the Governor's desk.

HB4890 allows children in federal immigration custody to apply for a humanitarian visa by establishing a new pathway for dependency in Illinois courts. By establishing this clear pathway and access to court-ordered services, we are reinforcing our responsibility to protect vulnerable children from further harm. We are making sure no child is overlooked, and that Illinois remains a place all children are given the chance to heal.

Thank you to the National Immigrant Justice Center, Children’s Legal Center, and the Cook County Public Guardian for their partnership in advancing this legislation.

Senator Omar Aquino and I stand alongside the nurses at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital. Everyone has the right to unionize and their voices to be heard.

When nurses fight for better conditions, they are fighting for all of us.

As I walk into the final week of the budget season in Springfield I want to reflect on the things that motivate me. While some believe that providing taxpayer funds to mega projects like the Chicago Bears should be a priority, I continue to believe that our job as stewards of local government is to create policies that provide everyone a fair chance at living a healthy and fulfilled life. I want to thank the Home Illinois Summit and the IL Office to Prevent and End Homelessness for highlighting the imperative we have as policy makers to end homelessness in our lifetime.

Legislative Update: SB3291 has passed both chambers and now heads to Governor Pritzker for final approval.

SB3291 authorizes a circuit court clerk of any county to develop and maintain a will depository system. This creates an accessible option for constituents to safeguard original wills, without requiring private legal assistance. By supporting a more efficient probate process, we are reducing unnecessary litigation and supporting families during an already difficult time. Thank you to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Mariyana T. Spyropoulos for their partnership in advancing this legislation.
