Do you have a favorite store where you return again and again, losing track of time while examining the wares, and finding many treasures that weren't on your shopping list?

For me, it's always been Performers Music, a sheet music store in the Fine Arts Building on South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. They're experts at tracking down published music, and they often alert me to interesting new releases that frequently get added to my repertoire. I have had so many life-changing discoveries there, including when I was 14 and I found an edition of the Corelli Sonatas with historic ornaments, which inspired my interest in historically-informed performance practice. Then there was the time when the shop owner, Lee Newcomer, told me about the publication of the violin concerto by Beethoven's dedicatee, Franz Clement, and it led to my pairing it with the Beethoven Violin Concerto on an album that I dedicated to Lee.

Performers Music is one of just a few independently-owned sheet music purveyors in the U.S. Their collection is incredibly diverse, and they serve all musicians at every level.

Traditionally, 80% of the store's profits have come from walk-in, in-store sales, but as the Fine Arts Building is not fully open during the COVID-19 pandemic, the business is in crisis.
