Why do Passenger Trains Pass Stop Signals? Federal Railroad Administration publishes a technical report about the findings and recommendations from research into stop signal violations at several passenger railroads. Accident data was collected for this study related to stop signal overruns (SSO) from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Railroad Administration accident databases. We can't say it enough: Even if railroad tracks look abandoned or unused, they are private property and trespassing is illegal. And dangerous. If you see tracks, you should ALWAYS expect a train--at any time, and in any direction.
