A New Home, A New Chapter!

After nearly a year of patience, persistence, and support, Jacob finally has a new apartment to call home!

Throughout the long and challenging Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) application process, our Housing Navigator, Valerie, stood by Jacob every step of the way.

She answered his questions, advocated for him, and encouraged him throughout the process.

Finally, about a year after submitting his application, Jacob received the opportunity he had been waiting for. Valerie accompanied him to select his new apartment!

This is what housing navigation is all about: removing barriers, providing consistent support, and helping individuals find a place to call home.

There’s a solid reason why you probably don't remember much from your language classes in high school or college. How much practical speaking did you do in class? Did you have to trudge your way through worksheets and tests most of the time?

In the Trellus Adult Education Program, English language students produce a high volume of functional, meaningful output at every level in a structured setting that connects to their lives, to their classmates, and to real-world situations, all with a seamless progression from level to level.

To celebrate their hard work, our English language learners competed in the Trellus Games, a five-event competition that gives students the opportunity to perform under a little pressure and demonstrate their increasing language skills with a heavy focus on speaking accuracy. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded in a lower and higher division.

Practical language training builds our students' confidence quickly, which is integral to their success outside of the classroom. Most importantly, Trellus students are empowered to assist language learners that are new to the program, creating a sense of community.

Throwback to the 50th Ward Job Fair Trellus attended on September 24! It was wonderful connecting with job seekers, sharing Trellus workforce resources, and being part of such a great community event.

A special thank you to State Senator Ram Villivalam and State Representative Kevin Olickal for taking the time to connect with us. On September 17, Trellus gathered along with other members of the Coalition to Sustain Adult Education to send an important message to Illinois elected leaders: we need increased local funding to keep our adult literacy programs accessible to all levels of learners! Thank you State Senator Graciela Guzmán and State Representative Theresa Mah for showing up and supporting adult education!

One of the most rewarding things about adult education, and English language learning in particular, is seeing the impact of our work in real time. After just a few months in our classes, clients who initially arrive feeling overwhelmed or fearful often become more confident, engaged, and comfortable navigating a predominantly English-speaking society. At Trellus, they find community and friendship, build literacy and digital skills, and receive the support they need to help their families and pursue their goals.

We’re proud to partner with the Illinois Coalition to Sustain Adult Education in advocating for sustained funding that allows this important work to continue—and ensures that adult learners across Illinois have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.

Work moves fast at Trellus, but pausing to appreciate the people who make it all happen is just as important as the work itself. On September 10th, our team gathered for our end-of-summer staff celebration! ☀️🎉

From shared meals and games to great conversations and non-stop laughter, it was a fantastic opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and simply enjoy being together. The work we do isn't always easy, which makes taking time to reconnect, recharge, and celebrate one another so essential.

We are deeply grateful for this incredible team and the heart, dedication, and energy they bring to Trellus and our communities every single day. 💙
