Smoke from wildfires in Canada continues to impact air quality in Chicago. Wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Based on current levels of particulate matter, air quality in Chicago today is unhealthy. Groups that may be more sensitive – people with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children and teens – should take steps to limit their exposure:
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
- Keep outdoor activities short
- Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them
Others are recommended to consider these steps to reduce their exposure:
- Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard
- Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors
