On November 15, 2011, all 7 aldermen, including Alderman Moreno and Alderman Waguespack voted to close the 19th District Police Station and the 13th District Police Station with no concessions and no concrete plans in place for the citizens affected by these closures, despite great community outpouring and protests to Save the 13th District Police Station. Anne Shaw is the best candidate for IL 4th District State Representative. She was the one who spearheaded the fight against Rahm’s budget in 2011 that closed our 13th Police District, our schools and our mental health facilities. We have higher crime and the highest number of carjackings as a result of that budget. She was the only one to confront Rahm directly with 6500 signatures the community collected to stop that budget. No other candidate in this race has fought for our 13th District. They were nowhere when we needed them and now they are trying to claim credit for Anne’s work because they want our votes.

Iris Millan claims she wants to reopen the 13th District, but she worked for Alderman Moreno who was proud to close the 13th when it was closed. Now she has received $65,000 from Moreno for her campaign - she wasn’t there for us and actually worked against us and now she wants you to believe she can reopen 13th. She did nothing, has done nothing, can’t do anything and won’t do anything.

We urge you to vote for Anne Shaw for 4th District State Representative and to support her because she was the only one there when we needed help.

Walking To Mass, 50-Year-Old Woman Attacked In West Town Robbery Attempt 08/29/2017

"Edwards was referring to the Wood Street Police station at 913 N. Wood St. that closed in Dec. 2013 due to budget cuts and later became a Cook County Sheriffs Office. Chicago police officers from the station were consolidated with the Near West District police at 1412 S. Blue Island Ave. on the border of Little Italy and Pilsen."

From our CAPs Facilitator Kim Shepherd:

The following is an excellent letter from the West Town Neighbors Association (WTNA) to Aldermen Maldonado and Moreno. The Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Association (UKVA) hosted Ald. Hopkins and Lt. Price at its recent meeting. The Smith Park Neighborhood Alliance (SPNA) Board has been in telephone and email contact with both aldermen since the beginning of the month, as well.

Ald. Moreno's office confirmed Friday night that it is coordinating a community meeting with elected officers and representatives of the Chicago Police Department. If schedules allow, it will be this week

WTNA Letter:

Dear Aldermen Maldonado and Moreno,

I write to you on behalf of the board, members and neighbors of the West Town Neighbors Association which is bordered by Chicago, Grand, Damen and Western. Our small area includes sections of the 1st and 26th wards. I write to express my concerns about crime and increased gun violence in our area and inadequate staffing in the 12th district. I write to you as our elected officials to seek answers about what you are doing to address these problems. I write to you to invite conversation, hear your solutions and work together.

Crime in our area includes both low-level crimes and gun-related violence. Crimes such as burglaries, car thefts and package thefts occur on a daily basis. We also experience armed robberies and carjackings.Three shootings took place just outside of our association borders within the past twelve days, one being fatal. Shots were fired mid-afternoon on Friday at the busy intersection of Chicago and Wood. This is an area of thriving businesses within blocks of a park, a daycare, an elementary school and a library. We can only be grateful that bullets did not hit innocent children.

Neighborhood safety is an ongoing topic at our West Town Neighbors Association meetings. Additionally, we encourage everyone to attend beat 1221 CAPS meetings and stay informed through our responsive CAPS facilitator, Kim Shepherd. We recommend everyone to build relationships with neighbors to watch out for one another and communicate about any safety concerns. We recommend facebook users to stay informed through the Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Watch group. We encourage individuals to reach out to you with their concerns. What else can we do?

When the 13th district Wood Street police station closed and merged with the 12th district, we were given assurances that policing would not be impacted and there would be more officers on the streets. Previous levels of policing have yet to be restored. How are the police to respond to increased violence with decreased resources?

Criminals do not pay attention to ward, neighborhood association, or police district boundaries. The activities of our daily lives are not confined to these boundaries either. In an area with gerrymandered ward boundaries, it is critical for you as our elected officials to work together to find solutions and send a unified message to residents and business owners. What solutions and reassurances can you offer? What influence do you have on restoring adequate policing in the 12th district? What more can we do together to make our community safe? People want to hear from you and to have their voices be heard as well. We are willing to host or co-host a forum in the near future as a first step to collaborate.

I look forward to receiving a response and an invitation for further conversation.

Sincerely,
Liz Kuhn Tomka
President, West Town Neighbors Association

West Town Needs Its Police Back, Says Petitioners Demanding More Patrols 08/16/2016

After closing the 13th District Police station four years ago - much of what we predicted unfortunately has started to come true. They lied to us about having more officers. We have dangerously low numbers and less than before the closure and merger of the 13th with the 12th. This is dangerous for the people and for the police officers.

West Town Needs Its Police Back, Says Petitioners Demanding More Patrols First seven months of 2016: Shootings doubled and number of wounded tripled over last year in West Town.

Man Shot Dead At Division, Western Intersection Early Monday, Police Say 08/08/2016

Within walking distance of the Old 13. Miss me? This is terrible and contributes to the over 2000 shootings in Chicago thus far. Why are we only one of two police districts that closed? Still think we don't need our 13th District. Alderman Moreno thinks so.

Man Shot Dead At Division, Western Intersection Early Monday, Police Say The 25-year-old man was stopped at a red light when he was shot in his head at 2:27 a.m., police said.

Walter Burnett: RESTORE ADEQUATE POLICE TO 12 - RAP12 07/14/2016

Its been a long time, but now we have the actual truth that the merger of the 12th and 13th district did NOT actually give us more police officers, it actually resulted in dangerously low numbers and reductions in the number of officers.

Please read this and sign the petition. We have had too many shootings, burglaries and other violent crimes in areas of the former 13th District.

But we all just received some of the highest property tax increases in the City. Alderman Moreno said last year that it was his proudest moment to close the 13th District - but his proudest moment has turned into a dangerous and unacceptable situation for the people who live, work, and pay taxes here.

Walter Burnett: RESTORE ADEQUATE POLICE TO 12 - RAP12 When the City of Chicago announced it was closing the Chicago Police Department’s 13th District/Wood Street Station and merging it with the 12th District to form the 12th District/Near West, citizens in the 13th District were assured that the closed district station would not affect policing and the...

Police warn of violent muggings in Wicker Park 04/17/2016

Be careful! Things are only going to get worse as the weather gets warmer. Do you miss the 13th District Police Station, yet? Has having the Sheriff in the police station these past few years made any difference in policing our neighborhoods and reducing crime? I don't think so.

Police warn of violent muggings in Wicker Park Chicago police are warning residents in the Wicker Park neighborhood about a group of men who are assaulting and robbing people at night.
