Yesterday, a teen from Palatine, Illinois was arrested for an alleged mass shooting plot targeting the largest Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. Advancing Justice | AAJC and Advancing Justice | Chicago share the relief this threat was taken seriously and the attack stopped, and we are standing with those affected.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC and Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago issued the following statement in response:

“No one should have to fear for their safety because of the way they look or worship. We are deeply disturbed by reports of a planned mass shooting targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois.

Hate does not happen in a vacuum. Unfortunately, such violence has a long history in the U.S. rooted in white supremacy and xenophobia and has been exacerbated by racist rhetoric coming from many offices of power. Our most recent analysis of the FBI hate crime found that 2025 was one of the worst years for anti-Asian hate crimes. Anti-Hindu hate crimes increased by 12% from 2024 to 2025, making 2025 the highest year on record for anti-Hindu hate crimes. The normalization of hateful rhetoric puts everyone in danger, including Asian American, South Asian, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Jewish, Black, and other minority communities.

We will continue to demand leaders at all levels reject bigotry and hate-fueled language, speak out against hate, and take action to protect all communities targeted by such violence.”

Election Day is in 3 weeks! This , Grace from Hanul Family Alliance 한울종합복지관 reminds us what's at stake: "I vote because our community’s voice is far too important to be silent. When we step up and cast our ballots, we aren't just participating in an election — we are claiming our seat at the table, shaping policy, and building a stronger, more powerful foundation for generations to come."

Every week leading up to the general election in November, we're going to spotlight AAPI community members and Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment partners about why they vote! Why do YOU vote? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

Congratulations to Advancing Justice | Chicago's Executive Director Grace Pai for being named to Crain's Chicago Business 40 Under 40 Class of 2026! 🎉

Under Grace's leadership, Advancing Justice | Chicago has secured key wins for AAPI communities in recent years, including passing the TEAACH Act (2021), which requires Asian American history to be taught in all public schools, and the Language Equity and Access Act (2024), which requires state agencies to remove language barriers for Illinois' growing immigrant community.

We are so grateful for Grace's vision, tenacity, and commitment to advance racial equity. Please join us in congratulating Grace on this recognition of her dedicated leadership and advocacy for AAPI communities in Chicago and beyond! 🧡

Early voting has begun in downtown Chicago, and we're continuing with Lee from HANA Center who shared that they vote "to advocate for our intergenerational community members who cannot vote or may face barriers to getting to the polls, and for those we cherish in our community who may be ESL or undocumented."

It's time for A Just Chi's October General Meeting with Free Press Action on Wednesday, October 21st from 6-7:30pm over Zoom! Free Press Action will join us for a teach-in about Solidarity Over Surveillance: a hub for individuals, communities and organizations to join the fight against corporate and government-sponsored surveillance.

They're fighting to:

- Stop data brokers from selling our most sensitive information to law enforcement;
- Protect dissent, privacy and anonymity in an age of AI-powered surveillance;
- Empower people to use open-records requests to expose their local and state governments’ surveillance partnerships;
- Challenge the government’s weaponization of domestic-terrorism powers; and
- Fight the inevitability of AI everywhere.

Join us to learn more about the fight in Illinois!
