Yesterday we welcomed this year’s General Laborer Trainee Program class to City Hall to begin their training. The program provides summer job opportunities to recent CPS graduates, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in public service while developing practical skills. Individuals who complete the program are positioned for long-term trades career opportunities with the City of Chicago.

166 people have gone through the program since 2024, and 133 have been hired into full time positions with the City. We’re grateful to our partners at Chicago Public Schools, Liuna1001, Hire360 Partners, and Chicago Mayor's Office for helping foster career pathways in public service for young adults.

Hey, Chicago- let's talk equity! In 2023, DSS launched its Area Tree Trimming initiative. With Area Trimming, DSS Forestry crews go neighborhood by neighborhood, trimming where it’s needed instead of relying on 3-1-1 calls. This approach is more efficient, more equitable with fewer delays and less for residents to worry about.

Because city services should fix problems fast, clearly, and without delays.

The impact:
93,600 trims (2020-2023)
270,000+ trims (2023-2026)
188% increase
Nearly tripling annual trims
