🌟 New segment in The Villager 🗞️

We’re excited to introduce Ask Annie, a new monthly column where licensed clinical professional counselor and board-certified art therapist Annie Novotny answers real questions from our community about the everyday work of building a meaningful life.

Her first column tackles a feeling many of us know well: How do I slow down when I’m always rushing?

Have a question for Annie? Send it to [email protected]. All questions will be published anonymously.

Read Annie’s answer to this months question in the October Villager or online at BAPA.org.

Happy happy birthday to us!

BAPA has been bringing Beverly and Morgan Park together since 1947.

We may be getting older, but we’re not slowing down anytime soon!

Here’s to 79 years of loving where we live 💚

In 1907, Frederick B. Carver had a home built on S. Vanderpoel Ave. More than 100 years later, his grandson, John Carver, still calls that same house home.

Three generations of Carvers have lived there, with John growing up in the house, playing ball in the yard, enjoying Friday night backyard barbecues and later returning to help care for his father.

While the house has seen some updates over the years, much of its original character remains, from its quarry-stone foundation to its 10” baseboards.

John briefly moved away in his 20s, but came back and never looked back. After more than a century, the Carver family’s connection to the home is still going strong.

“There’s nowhere else I’d rather live,” John said.

When Jim and Erin Love moved from Milwaukee to Beverly/Morgan Park earlier this year, they quickly discovered their new block had something unexpected in common: Marquette pride. In fact, one of Jim’s new neighbors was even a former classmate!

The couple, both Marquette alums and lifelong South Siders, had always considered coming back to Chicago. When they welcomed their daughter, Eleanor, they decided it was time to be closer to family, and Beverly/Morgan Park was the obvious choice.

They found their home almost immediately, were welcomed with a block party just weeks after moving in, and have already started exploring neighborhood favorites from coffee shops and bakeries to Western Avenue restaurants and concerts.

For Jim, the biggest difference from Milwaukee is simple: “Everyone seems to have no more than 1 degree of separation.”

Welcome home, Loves!

🎃 There’s a new rivalry growing on 107th Place… and it’s all about pumpkins.

Neighbors Gina Sojka and Matt Nash have turned their parkways into pumpkin patches!

Gina’s patch started when her kids smashed their leftover pumpkins into the snow a few years ago. Come spring, pumpkins started popping up. Now, her patch takes over the entire parkway and produces around 15 pumpkins a year.

Matt, an avid gardener, took notice and planted some of Gina’s seeds this spring. His first crop has already produced seven pumpkins (with more still growing!).

Now, with the two families living on opposite sides of Crescent Park, a friendly “Crescent East vs. Crescent West” competition is underway. Who can grow the biggest pumpkin? The most unique shape? The most pumpkins?

🎃 If you’ve ever driven past 96th & Wi******er around Halloween, you know this house.

Justin and John Uzonyi have turned their Beverly/Morgan Park home into a full-blown Halloween tradition, complete with giant inflatables, spooky lawn decorations, a handmade spiderweb tunnel and enough creativity to regularly stop traffic. 👻

What started as a family tradition has become a neighborhood attraction, with kids lining the street to get a look and even a few curious police officers making a late-night visit.

The couple keeps things spooky but kid-friendly, drawing inspiration from classics like Scooby-Doo rather than going for gore. And every year, they add something new.

🎃 Want to see what all the fuss is about? Take a walk past 96th & Wi******er Ave. to check it out for yourself!
