The story of Amate House began 42 years ago with the faith, love, courage, and support of our founding board, including one extraordinary woman named Sister Mary Ellen Nolan, R.S.M.

Sr. Mary Ellen worked tirelessly to secure the funding needed to open our doors and transform the empty convent in Old St. Patrick's Church into a welcoming home for our fellows. 🏠

She scrubbed floors, made beds, painted walls, and poured her energy and prayers into this community, even as she battled terminal cancer.

She would have been so proud to meet this year’s fellows—12 remarkable young leaders from seven states, all united by a shared purpose: to serve and uplift Chicago’s most vulnerable neighbors.

Last night, the fellows joined the McKinley Park Development Council for their monthly speaker series. We learned about McKinley Parkways and the Chicago Park District's Rethinking Lawns project. How cool to have two biodiversity initiatives right in our backyard!
