University of Illinois Cancer Center member Hunter Holt, MD, MAS, is the first and corresponding author on a collaborative article published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The article, “Self-Collected HPV Testing for Cervical Cancer Screening—Responsible Implementation to Reduce Disparities,” suggests that self-collected HPV testing can potentially transform screening, making it easier and more convenient for patients to be screened for cervical cancer.

Starting June 1, students across Illinois will join the University of Illinois Cancer Center to conduct hands-on , work alongside leading scientists and explore careers in medicine, public health and translational science.
Through four unique training programs, 30 undergraduate, graduate and medical students from diverse backgrounds will gain hands-on experience and mentorship opportunities at the Cancer Center.

The University of Illinois Cancer Center, UI Health, Mile Square Health Center and the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry put on another successful annual screening awareness campaign for oral, head and neck cancer.
The weeklong campaign in April, which is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, served nearly 160 people who took advantage of free screening exams that take about 5 to 10 minutes and can detect early signs of the cancer.

Nobel Prize-winning scientist Harold Varmus, MD, a pioneering cancer researcher and former Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), visited the Cancer Center and the lab of Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD, who completed his postdoctoral fellowship in molecular oncology working with Varmus at the University of California, San Francisco.

The Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) team at the University of Illinois Cancer Center participated in the 2026 Association of Cancer Center Administrators (ACCA) Cancer Center Administrators Forum (CCAF) in April.
The annual forum convened administrators and leaders from National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers and institutions pursuing designation to discuss emerging trends in cancer center operations, research administration, workforce development and collaborative leadership.
