The University of Illinois Cancer Center proudly announces the 2026-2027 Richard B. Warnecke, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow is Maura Lima Pereira Bueno, PhD, who is mentored by Cancer Center member Sandra Pinho, PhD.

The award, $15,000 for one year, will support Bueno’s work on research in the Pinho Lab focused on developing safer and more effective approaches to leukemia and stem cell transplantation when a fully matched donor is unavailable.

University of Illinois Cancer Center member Natalie Reizine, MD, is featured in a Researcher Spotlight by Cures Within Reach (CWR), a global nonprofit that identifies and funds clinical trials testing approved therapies for unsolved diseases.

A UI Health oncologist who specializes in genitourinary cancers, the trial was inspired by her patients with who often ask about natural supplements, and by earlier lab discoveries from fellow Cancer Center Translational Oncology Research Program member Gnanasekar Munirathinam, PhD, and his research team. In a 2022 study, they proposed that glycyrrhizin could be an anti-cancer agent.

Diandra Vaval Taylor, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the UIC Retzky College of Pharmacy.

Her research, conducted under the mentorship of Joanna E. Burdette, PhD, a co-leader of the Cancer Biology Research Program at the University of Illinois Cancer Center and the Edward and Josephine Mika Professor in the College of Pharmacy, focuses on understanding the molecular factors that contribute to high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) progression and metastasis, as well as exploring innovative therapeutic approaches for the disease.

When a nearby transformer blew, and the power went out, the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium (CRC) Summit kept going at the Big Ten Conference headquarters in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont.

Big Ten CRC leadership and University of Illinois Cancer Center leaders — because the Cancer Center was this year's summit host — pivoted quickly, moving chairs and people out of a darkened conference room and into a sun-drenched section of the headquarters.

There, presenters shared their research without slides; they spoke louder to be heard; and one researcher even hopped on a stool to be better seen. Throughout the Oct. 2 summit, Cancer Center Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD, worked as a roving emcee.

University of Illinois Cancer Center member Sean McClellan, MD, MAS, was awarded a $948,000 K01 grant, over five years, from the John E. Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which he will use to improve care for by advancing research on integrating primary and survivorship care.

McClellan is a UI Health family physician and cancer survivorship care provider with strong training in survivorship care. He is also a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at the Cancer Center.

A new study in the journal Breast Cancer Research, “Tumor Cell Jagged-1 Promotes Regional Lymphatic Metastasis and Predicts Recurrence in Node-Positive Breast Cancer,” demonstrates the importance of tumor cell Jagged-1 in promoting the spread of to nearby lymph nodes and presents evidence that Jagged-1 could be used as a clinical biomarker to predict breast cancer outcomes or as a potential treatment target.

Led by Cancer Center Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD, the collaborative study highlights the impact of team science in advancing breast cancer research.
