What does it take to make our region's transportation system safer?

Welcome to , where we highlight one of our current projects and share what we’re doing in our region. Today, we’re looking at how CMAP is advancing a Safe Systems approach across northeastern Illinois.

A Safe Systems approach recognizes that people make mistakes. Instead of assuming crashes always can be prevented, it asks how we can design a transportation system where those mistakes don’t result in serious injuries or deaths.

CMAP and county partners have committed to a goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries across the region.

What are the challenges facing northeastern Illinois that could drastically shape our future and need regional-scale coordination?

The Century Plan Preview — released this week —details the emerging direction of the region’s next long-range vision, focusing on five Grand Challenges where regional action will matter most. These are the issues too big for any one community or organization to solve alone.

The Century Plan is a roadmap to guide regional alignment around what matters most and how we take action together to secure the future we want. It is also an invitation to think big and make bold plans for our region’s future.

We invite you to join the conversation — help test these ideas, deepen our shared understanding, and begin building the partnerships we’ll need to act, together.

Years of research, collaboration, and public engagement has led to this moment: One shared vision for northeastern Illinois' transportation future.

The CMAP Board and MPO Policy Committee jointly adopted the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan unanimously, setting the region's transportation priorities through 2050.

With 136 fiscally constrained Regional Capital Projects representing more than $80 billion in project costs — part of a larger half trillion dollar operations and maintenance spending package — the RTP provides a framework for strategic investments in roads, transit, freight, accessibility, and walking and biking.

The plan is adopted. The work continues.

Today’s joint CMAP Board and MPO Policy Committee meeting marked significant milestones for two of the region’s initiatives — the Regional Transportation Plan and The Century Plan — both grounded in collaboration and regional-scale solutions.

With the unanimous adoption of the Regional Transportation Plan, northeastern Illinois has set a vision for strategic investments in roads, transit, freight, accessibility, and walking and biking through 2050. This reflects years of research, collaboration, and public engagement — thank you to our partners and residents across the region who helped shape this plan.

CMAP is also leading development of The Century Plan — a long-term vision to guide regional alignment around what matters most and how we take action together to secure the future we want.

The Plan Preview, released today, focuses the next stage of developing The Century Plan around five Grand Challenges — issues that have the potential to drastically change northeastern Illinois and are too big for any community or organization to address on their own.

The CMAP Board and MPO Policy Committee recognized U.S. Senator Dick Durbin at their meeting today, thanking him for his four decades of service in Congress. Senator Durbin will retire at the end of his term.

The senator shared guidance, insights and stories in a conversation with Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi, CMAP Board Chair/Palos Hills Mayor Gerald Bennett, and CMAP Executive Director Erin Aleman.

He credits an internship with a senator from Illinois in his senior year of college for igniting his passion for public service and helping people. He said over the years, he's had more than 3,000 interns and joked, "they're everywhere." In fact, several of them happened to be in the room today (and joined in the group photo).

Durbin’s career is marked by landmark legislation advancing reforms across immigration, criminal justice, healthcare, consumer protections, and more. He has also been an instrumental leader to strengthen Illinois' transportation infrastructure and catalyze economic growth in northeastern Illinois and across the state.

CMAP will rename its main meeting room at the Old Post Office in his honor.
