Thresholds Thresholds is one of the oldest, largest providers of mental health and substance use treatment in Illinois.

Founded in 1959, Thresholds provides healthcare, housing, and hope for thousands of persons with mental illnesses and substance use conditions in Illinois each year. Through care, employment, advocacy, and housing, Thresholds assists and inspires people with mental illnesses to reclaim their lives. Thresholds is one of the oldest and largest providers of recovery services for persons with mental illnesses and substance use conditions in Illinois. We offer more than 33 innovative programs at nearly 100 locations throughout Chicago, the adjacent suburbs, and four surrounding counties. Services include assertive outreach, case management, housing, employment, education, psychiatry, primary care, substance use treatment, and research. Thresholds’ staff meets people where they are – out in the community. Offering services in a community-based setting makes them more accessible and effective and lessens the social exclusion that is often present in the lives of persons living with mental illnesses and substance use conditions. This allows our staff and clients to work on skills, clinical interventions, and recovery that allows them to live independent lives in their own neighborhoods

Our clients are all unique – coming from vastly different backgrounds and arriving with different needs, talents, and hopes. Each client works with our staff to set their own specific short-term goals and objectives, based on their needs, desires, and level of self-sufficiency. Recovery from mental health and substance use conditions is possible. Recovery is a process of finding and living a satisfying and meaningful life, as one defines it for oneself. We assist our clients as they work to reclaim a positive sense of self, and discover their own potential, gifts, and skills.

Thresholds was out in force today sharing our work and leading the way on behavioral health change. President and CEO Mark Ishaug presented on a Panel at the Advocates For Human Potential Leadership Conversation on how the behavioral health system payment systems and policies are shifting, and what opportunities and challenges this brings to the sector.

Then Chief Strategy Officer Sherin Khan was the keynote speaker alongside Dr. Johnson Torous of Harvard Medical School at the NAMI Illinois Conference, presenting on the evolving role of AI and digital technologies in mental healthcare.

We're proud to continue to contribute to the health and development of the entire behavioral health sector!

Feeling a little more “blah” as the seasons change? You’re not alone. 💙

Less sunlight and shorter days can result in changes in mood, energy, focus, and motivation. For some people, those changes can be connected to languishing or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

If you haven’t been feeling quite like yourself, take a moment to check in. Swipe through for signs to be aware of and simple ways to support your mental health as the seasons change.

We're excited to share that Thresholds has been awarded a three-year Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) grant from SAMHSA to expand mental health awareness and crisis response training across Chicago!

Through this funding, we'll train hundreds of community members in Mental Health First Aid, su***de prevention, crisis de-escalation, trauma-informed approaches, and connecting individuals to care. Working with schools, hospitals, faith-based organizations, employers, first responders, housing organizations, and other community partners, we're helping build a stronger network of support for people experiencing mental health challenges and crises.

Together, we can create more informed, compassionate communities and ensure more people know where to turn for help.

Housing is a human right!

Joann lives with schizophrenia and struggled with homelessness after losing her apartment. She experienced hospitalization and was living in a nursing home when she connected with Thresholds. Since then, she has gotten her own apartment and has been able to successfully manage her illness for seven years.

Last week, in front of City Hall, she shared her story as a powerful testament to the difference that supportive housing makes. Stories like this are why Thresholds remains committed to .

We proudly joined fellow advocates and providers like Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness, Deborah's Place, ONE Northside, and Center for Housing and Health at the launch of the Keep Chicago Housed campaign!
