This Immigrant Heritage Month, we honor the vibrant tapestry of cultures that makes Chicago unique and celebrate Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, the city’s first permanent non-Native settler. Born in present-day Haiti and a skilled trader, Du Sable established a thriving settlement at the mouth of the Chicago River in the late 1700s, a place that would grow into the world-class city we know today.

His entrepreneurial spirit forged a bridge between cultures, working alongside Indigenous communities and forging connections across nations and peoples.

Today, Chicago thrives thanks to generations of immigrants whose determination, innovation, and courage continue to shape our neighborhoods, our food, our arts, and our shared future.
