This week, I had the honor of recognizing two amazing institutions before the County Board!

Arise Chicago celebrates 35 years of advancing worker rights and has helped thousands of workers through their advocacy, leadership development, and community organizing.

Alongside Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vásquez, we also recognized the work of the Illinois Accountability Commission, which produced the most comprehensive report of federal immigration activity in Cook County.

Thank you to Arise Chicago and the IL Accountability Commission for centering the well-being of our immigrant neighbors.

In honor of May Day and as Chair of the Labor Committee, I hosted a hearing with all county agencies to discuss the state of Cook County’s workforce. A few trends emerged:

✅6 out of 9 county agencies reported having a majority female workforce
✅All agencies reported strong collaboration with labor unions
✅All agencies pledged to continue expanding pathway programs to create a strong workforce in the future
✅There is commitment from the County to reduce hiring timelines, vacancies, and turnover rates

There is always more we can do to strengthen and grow our workforce, but this hearing is first step to understanding how our labor is doing today.

Earlier this week, I was in Springfield for Latino Unity Day, where I shared some of the policy wins we’ve achieved in Cook County and encouraged people to engage with county governments across the state as advocacy partners. It was inspiring to come together with Latinos from across Illinois to continue fighting for better policies for our communities.
