What does heritage look like when it is still being made?

For 50 years, the Swedish American Museum has been preserving the stories, traditions, and experiences that helped shape Andersonville and Swedish America. Founded in 1976 and dedicated by King Carl XVI Gustaf during his historic visit to Chicago, the Museum has grown into a cultural anchor for generations of visitors, families, and community members.

But the Museum's story is about more than preserving the past. Through exhibitions, educational programs, language classes, genealogy resources, and cultural celebrations, it continues to explore how heritage evolves and remains relevant in a changing world.

As the Museum celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, it invites us to consider how traditions are passed forward, how immigrant stories continue to shape our communities, and how culture remains alive through the people who carry it into the future.

Each June, Andersonville Midsommarfest invites the community to gather along Clark Street as the neighborhood comes alive in celebration. Rooted in the Swedish tradition of welcoming the longest day of the year, Midsommarfest honors the makers of music, the makers of craft, and the makers of community.

This year, June 12-14 Midsommarfest celebrates 60 years of bringing people together in Andersonville. For six decades, the festival has reflected the neighborhood’s welcoming spirit and longstanding commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and connection. It is a place where the LGBTQIA2S+ community is celebrated, where everyone is invited to show up as they are, and where joy is shared together.

Beyond being a beloved summer tradition, Midsommarfest also serves as an important fundraising event. Revenue generated supports the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce’s year-round programming and provides financial support to more than a dozen local nonprofits annually.

Come wander, listen, eat, dance, and stay awhile. Find fun in the freedom of being yourself. Why raise the roof when you can raise the maypole?

Strange Cargo is Andersonville's home for "all the crap you don't need" at 5216 N Clark.

Owner Jay Schwartz has been in the business of making people happy his whole life. He started working in his dad's pawn shop at age 5. In 1993, Schwartz and his brother bought Strange Cargo and added the popular T-shirt customization line in 2005. The store moved from Wrigleyville to Andersonville in 2018.

Strange Cargo's storefront displays have become a Clark Street institution: political, hilarious, and completely unfiltered. The windows always have something to say.
