In partnership with the 𝐵𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐺𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑦 𝑁𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑒, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝐿𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑜𝑠𝑡 10 and 𝐸𝑙 𝑃𝑜𝑧𝑜 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠, join us to award the Borinqueneers Congressional Gold Medal to the families of Korean War veterans: 𝐏𝐅𝐂 𝐏𝐄𝐃𝐑𝐎 𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐒-𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐀 (of Medical Co.) and 𝐏𝐅𝐂 𝐉𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐎 𝐋. 𝐅𝐈𝐆𝐔𝐄𝐑𝐎𝐀-𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐋 (of Co. K who died of wounds received in Korea). The event will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 1:30pm at the Makinson-Carson Post 10 American Legion Post, 205 Lakeview Dr, Kissimmee, FL 34741. Our special invited guest is Major General Antonio J. Vicéns (Ret., ARNG), former Adjutant General of the Puerto Rico National Guard.

First in Valor:
The Boricua Who Led the Way

Private First Class Fernando Luis García made history as the first Boricua ever to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest military distinction for bravery. Born on October 14, 1929, his name became immortal on September 5, 1952, during the Korean War. In the chaos of battle at Outpost Bruce in the Bunker Hill sector of Korea, an enemy gr***de landed among his fellow Marines. Without hesitation, García threw himself onto it, absorbing the blast and sacrificing his life to save his comrades.

His actions secured him a permanent place in history as the first Puerto Rican to be awarded the Medal of Honor, and to this day he remains the only Puerto Rican Marine to hold that distinction. The medal was awarded posthumously on October 25, 1953, in Utuado, Puerto Rico, honoring a young Boricua whose courage set the standard for generations to follow.

Fernando Luis García opened the path for eight more Puerto Rican servicemen who would later receive the Medal of Honor, but he will always be remembered as the first. His legacy is not only one of sacrifice, but of leadership through action — proving that Boricuas have stood at the forefront of courage and honor wherever history has called.

Primero en Valor: El Boricua que Marcó el Camino

El Privado Primera Clase Fernando Luis García hizo historia como el primer Boricua en recibir la Medalla de Honor, la más alta distinción militar por valentía. Nacido el 14 de octubre de 1929, su nombre quedó grabado para siempre el 5 de septiembre de 1952 durante la Guerra de Corea.

En medio del combate en el puesto avanzado Bruce, en el área de Bunker Hill en Corea, una granada enemiga cayó cerca de sus compañeros. Sin dudarlo, García se lanzó sobre ella, absorbiendo la explosión y sacrificando su vida para salvar a los demás.

Su acción lo convirtió en el primer Puertorriqueño en recibir la Medalla de Honor, y hasta hoy sigue siendo el único Marine Puertorriqueño en poseerla. La medalla fue otorgada póstumamente el 25 de octubre de 1953 en Utuado, Puerto Rico, honrando a un joven Boricua cuyo valor estableció el estándar para las generaciones futuras.

Fernando Luis García abrió el camino para otros ocho Puertorriqueños que más tarde también recibirían la Medalla de Honor, pero siempre será recordado como el primero. Su legado es uno de sacrificio y liderazgo con el ejemplo, demostrando que los Boricuas han estado al frente del valor y el honor dondequiera que la historia los haya llamado.
