I want to address the 4 wheeler issue. Stacey Mccurry never legally registered the four wheeler after he purchased it. When it was stolen, he made a report to the Payne County sheriffs office, they entered it into NCIC and then the next day it was removed out of NCIC by the Payne County Sheriff’s Office. With it being removed from NCIC it would not alert law-enforcement officials as stolen. That is on Payne County sheriffs office, not Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
When we recovered the stolen property off of a search warrant, we ran every VIN and serial number on stolen items found. When we ran the VIN on the four wheeler, it returned as not on file which means it had never legally been registered. We did our due diligence in trying to locate the property owners of the stolen items that were recovered. The majority of the stolen items were returned to their rightful owners.
Since the four wheeler did not show a legal registered owner and was not showing to be stolen, the proper documentation was completed and turned over to the district court and signed by a District Judge. Notification was posted on the disposal of items, as state law requires, and no one claimed the four wheeler, at which time we were authorized by the District Judge to utilize this particular equipment legally. The Grady County Sheriff’s Office repaired the four wheeler being that it was a frame, engine and a lot of plastic parts when we recovered it. We conducted another registration search, and there was no legal owner located or came forward. At which time we registered the vehicle through the state of Oklahoma in Grady County’s name.
The news report that KOCO did was not an accurate report on what has occurred.
Will the four wheeler be returned? That is the question that everybody is asking. The Grady County Sheriff’s Office has no intentions of keep anyone’s property that has been stolen. We are working through the legal process to get the four wheeler back to the rightful owner.
