A child who is overwhelmed is not giving you a hard time. They are having a hard time.
When tears, shouting or anger take over, itβs easy for adults to react too. βStop crying.β βCalm down.β βLook at me.β βTell me what happened.β But in that moment, more pressure usually makes it harder for a child to settle.
Children often need less talking, not more. A calm voice. A bit of space. Simple words. Time.
We can still hold boundaries: βI wonβt let you hit.β βIβm here when youβre ready.β We donβt have to accept unsafe behaviour to show a child that their feelings matter.
Try to notice your own stress first. Donβt match their anger. Donβt argue with every hurtful word said in the heat of the moment. Donβt force eye contact, hugs or apologies before they are calm enough to cope.
Co-regulation starts with us. A steady adult can help a childβs nervous system feel safe again.
