Chincoteague Island Library The Chincoteague Island Library is a privately-supported free library that serves residents and visitors year round.

Our Chincoteague Island Library is a small public library serving the residents of Chincoteague, our Eastern Shore neighbors and many seasonal visitors. Although free and open to the public, the library is independent and supported by private donations and grants and staffed by over 30 volunteers. We are affiliated with the Eastern Shore Public Library in Accomac, Virginia and share collections. The library contains current and popular books, audio books, CDs, a basic reference collection, magazines, DVDs, videos, and newspapers. There are computers for e-mail, word processing and surfing the net. The Island Library also offers 24-hour wireless internet connection. The Island Library offers programs for children and adults throughout the year. The children’s programs include a summer story time/craft hour held on Thursdays during July and August as well as several special programs throughout the year. Several book clubs also hold monthly discussions during the year. The library opened its doors on July 4, 1995. Less than 15 years later on Saturday, April 17, 2010, the library dedicated its brand new wing which tripled the size of the original building. Local architectural designer, Richard Vesely, donated his time and talent to create a design for an addition that preserved the original barbershop building and created a handsome new landmark that blends naturally into its historic waterside location. The Town of Chincoteague donated the land on which to build the addition, the Norfolk Foundation awarded the library a generous grant, and full-time, part-time residents and visitors of the community generously donated their time, talent and funds to help us reach our goal.

Tales 4 Tots•Field-trip to the Fire House 🚒🧯 was a lot of fun.

Hunter Leonard was our guest reader and gave the children a tour of the firehouse. Everyone got to climb aboard a real fire truck, ring the fire truck bells, check out the firefighters’ equipment, and watch Hunter put on his firefighting gear. It was a fun way to learn more about what firefighters do!

A big thank you to Hunter and the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company for welcoming us and making this such a fun (and informative) experience for our little ones. ❤️

This week we will be back at the library Tales 4 Tots • Pumpkins . Miss Jan will be our guest reader!

We love the smiles we see each week! 🚒

Thank you to Jon, Diane, and Linda for the photos!

🎃👻 It’s beginning to look a lot like Halloween at the Chincoteague Island Library! Stop by and see for yourself... if you dare. View the porch display, then come inside for even more fun & scary stuff!

Our witches, ghosts, and monsters are gathering to get ready for Trick or Treat on Main Street, where we’ll be handing out candy and books to all the little goblins and ghouls who stop by on Halloween.

Want to help us fill our cauldron with treats? Take a 👀 at our Amazon Wish List. Every donation is greatly appreciated, and our Halloween crew will be so grateful! 👻🎃👀

Congratulations to Patricia L., winner of the Chincoteague Journey Basket Raffle!
Patricia stopped by the library during a visit to Chincoteague this past spring. While obtaining a non-resident library card, she purchased several raffle tickets because she wanted to support the library.
She shared that she enjoys collecting library cards from different communities because she is a big fan of the Libby app and appreciates the expanded selection of books available through multiple library systems.
Patricia is already planning a trip back to the island to pick up her prize.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated items for the basket and to everyone who purchased raffle tickets. This raffle is an important fundraiser that helps support library programs, building operations, collections, and many of the services we provide to our community.
Thank you for supporting the library. Your generosity helps us continue serving residents and visitors alike, and we truly appreciate every contribution.
PS Thank you to Natalie for helping with the drawing!
