• New signage and pavement markings. BAY COUNTY

The $110 million construction project to widen 4.8 miles of U.S. 98 (Panama City Beach Parkway) from four to six travel lanes between Richard Jackson Boulevard and Mandy Lane in Bay County has begun. The construction effort will increase capacity, improve safety, and reduce congestion for a segment of U.S. 98 that accommodates more than 55,000 drivers daily. In addition to widening the roadway, crews will construct new bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of U.S. 98, add new traffic signals at both Mandy Lane and Gulf Boulevard, make improvements at the Pier Park Drive intersection, and upgrade stormwater drainage systems. OKALOOSA COUNTY

Josie Road to Florida Place SE
The $14.9 million construction project aimed at milling and resurfacing a 6.9-mile segment of U.S. 98 (State Road 30/Miracle Strip Parkway), from Josie Road to Florida Place SE, in Okaloosa County. The project also includes minor widening of shoulders and intersections throughout the project limits, upgrading sidewalks and pedestrian crossings to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, as well as drainage improvements, new signage, and enhanced pavement markings. The project is estimated for completion in fall 2024. SANTA ROSA COUNTY

Bayshore Road to Portside Drive
Construction activities are taking for the widening and improvements of the 4.25-mile stretch of US 98 from Bayshore Road to Portside Drive in Santa Rosa County. Project improvements include widening from a 4-lane to a 6-lane urban facility with a raised median, safety, and drainage upgrades, resurfacing S.R. 281 from U.S. 98 to Garcon Point Bridge, extending the existing shared-use path on the south side of U.S. 98 to Gondolier Boulevard; and new signage and pavement markings. This project is slated for completion in mid 2025. TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Bay County:
During construction, drivers may encounter detours, lane closures and minor traffic shifts. Two eastbound and two westbound travel lanes will be maintained at all times. Intermittent, and temporary lane closures will only occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Access to businesses will open at all times. Santa Rosa County:
There will be no traffic impacts associated with the construction of the ponds, but nearby residents and businesses may experience some noise during pond construction. When major roadway construction activities begin, motorists traveling along U.S. 98 can anticipate intermittent lane closures and restrictions between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Motorists are reminded to be alert for the presence of construction workers, obey the posted speed limit, and refrain from texting while driving. Do you know when to stop for a school bus?

Here is some information for National School Bus Safety Week about how Florida’s school bus stopping requirements apply on different types of roadways.

• Divided highway: Traffic traveling behind the bus must stop. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction is not required to stop when the roadway is divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide but should proceed with caution.
• Two-lane road: Traffic in both directions must stop.
• Multi-lane road paved across: Traffic in both directions must stop.

Crews are making progress on resiliency areas as part of the U.S. 98 Resurfacing project in Gulf County. These areas are designed to help strengthen and protect the roadway and surrounding infrastructure from the effects of erosion, wave action, storm surge and severe weather.

Here, crews are placing large rock, commonly referred to as riprap, along the shoreline. The irregularly shaped stone creates a durable protective layer that helps absorb and dissipate the energy of moving water before it can erode the soil supporting the roadway.

This effort is part of the $2.1 million resurfacing project to improve 2.5 miles of roadway along the Gulf Coast corridor. Completion of this project is scheduled for mid-2027.

During National School Bus Safety Week and Pedestrian Safety Month, remind young pedestrians that safe habits matter before and after the bus ride.

Use sidewalks and crosswalks when available, stay alert to surrounding traffic, and look left-right-left before crossing. Phones, headphones and other distractions can make it harder to see or hear what’s happening nearby.

Safe trips to and from school start with paying attention every step of the way.

Progress continues on the U.S. 98 widening project as crews begin early preparation for upcoming drainage improvements and driveway reconstruction in Bay County.

The work visible here is setting the stage for new and improved drainage features designed to efficiently move stormwater away from the roadway. Crews are also preparing areas where existing driveway connections will be reconstructed to tie into the new roadway configuration and provide continued access to properties along U.S. 98.

This work is part of the $59 million effort to widen U.S. 98 from four to six travel lanes between Richard Jackson Boulevarrd and the Hathaway Bridge in Panama City Beach. Completion of the work is scheduled for 2030.

National Teen Driver Safety Week is a good time for Florida families to review the requirements and restrictions that apply as teens gain experience behind the wheel.

Florida’s graduated licensing requirements include:

• Learner’s license holders must always be accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older.
• Teens must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
• Drivers age 16 may not drive between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
• Drivers age 17 may not drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Exceptions to the nighttime restrictions apply when driving to or from work or when accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older.

▪ Garden Street, between Pace Boulevard and N. Donelson Street, is reduced to two travel lanes (one in each direction) as crews perform construction activities on the north side of the street. This temporary traffic configuration will be in place through late 2026.

▪ Temporary side street closures north of Garden Street for stormwater drainage system reconstruction. This week, drivers may encounter a closure with detour at B Street. Signage will be in place to direct drivers through the work zone.

▪ On-street parking is closed on Garden Street, between A Street and L Street.

All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.

National School Bus Safety Week is October 19–23.

Millions of children across the country ride a school bus each day. While school buses are statistically safe, the areas around buses and bus stops require extra attention.

Drivers should stay alert around schools, buses and bus stops, particularly when children are boarding or leaving the bus.

National Teen Driver Safety Week begins today.

More than 450,000 licensed teen drivers are on Florida roads. For new drivers, gaining experience behind the wheel also means building habits that can carry into a lifetime of driving.

FLHSMV encourages teens to buckle up, obey speed limits, stay focused behind the wheel and never drive impaired.

Throughout the week, we’ll share information for teen drivers and their families about some of the choices and conditions that can affect safety on the road.
