🚤 THROWBACK THURSDAY: Water Patrol Edition! 🌊

Before today’s high-tech equipment and modern patrol boats, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department was already keeping an eye on things out on the water!

📸 This throwback photo from 1970 features David Carlson, Water Safety Patrol Deputy, ready to hit the water and help keep boaters safe across Chippewa County.

Back then, patrol might have looked a little different, but the mission was the same: promoting water safety, helping those in need, and making sure everyone could enjoy Wisconsin’s beautiful lakes and waterways safely. ☀️🛟

We’re curious… Who remembers seeing the Sheriff’s Department out on the water in the 1970s? Do you have any memories of the old water patrol or stories about boating in Chippewa County back in the day? Share them in the comments and your photo might just be the next Throwback Thursday post! 👇

Here’s to the deputies who have kept our waterways safer for generations! 🚤💙

🖤 Honoring the Life and Service of Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Bradley Ritger 🖤

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers of Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Bradley Ritger.

Behind every badge is a person who has made a commitment to serve others, protect their community, and answer the call when others need help. The loss of a fellow officer is felt far beyond their immediate family and agency, touching the hearts of the entire law enforcement community.

As we share the memorial information for Trooper Ritger, we ask our community to keep his loved ones and his Wisconsin State Patrol family in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

May Trooper Ritger’s service, sacrifice, and the lives he touched never be forgotten. We stand alongside our brothers and sisters in law enforcement as we honor his memory and support those who mourn his loss.

Rest in peace, Trooper Ritger. Thank you for your service. You will not be forgotten. 🖤💙

Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Wisconsin State Patrol, the family, friends, and loved ones of Trooper Ritger, and the entire law-enforcement community during this incredibly difficult time.

It is with profound sadness that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Wisconsin State Patrol announce the line-of-duty death of Trooper Bradley Ritger at the age of 29.

On September 21, 2026, Trooper Ritger was responding to a traffic pursuit when he deployed a tire deflation device on a bridge deck west of the Dunn County/Eau Claire County line. As he moved to a position of cover, he fell from the bridge onto the roadway below. Despite lifesaving efforts and critical medical care, Trooper Ritger succumbed to his injuries on October 2, 2026.

Trooper Ritger joined the Wisconsin State Patrol as a member of the 67th Recruit Class. He served in the Northwest Region for nearly five years, primarily in the Dunn County area. During his career, he attained certifications as a general law enforcement instructor, mobile field force team member and squad leader, and salvage vehicle inspector. Prior to his service with the Wisconsin State Patrol, Trooper Ritger served with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for three years.

Trooper Ritger was a dedicated public servant whose strong work ethic and positive presence left a lasting impact on anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He approached every situation with professionalism, integrity and a genuine commitment to serving others. Whether assisting the public, supporting his fellow troopers, or taking on difficult challenges, he consistently demonstrated compassion and willingness to help wherever needed. His dedication to his family and unwavering commitment to his profession will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Trooper Ritger’s family, friends, loved ones and all who served alongside him. As the community mourns, the Wisconsin State Patrol has placed a law enforcement memorial vehicle at its Northwest Region Post in Eau Claire where the public is welcome to drop off cards, flowers, or other condolences.

Out of respect for the family, no additional information will be shared at this time. Funeral arrangements are being made by the family. We kindly ask media and the public to respect their privacy and space for grieving.

🚨 Training Today for the Emergencies We Hope Never Happen 🚨

The Chippewa County CART Team (Child Abduction Response Team) found this multi-jurisdictional and multi-CART Team training exercise very beneficial. Many lessons were learned throughout this combined training exercise.

The scenario brought together approximately 30 agencies, organizations, and community partners from across the Chippewa Valley. Exercises like this give responders the opportunity to step outside the day-to-day routine and work through the challenges that can arise during a rapidly developing incident involving a missing child.

A response of this nature can involve many different resources. From law enforcement and emergency responders to schools, transportation providers, businesses, and community organizations, each partner can provide valuable assistance. Having the opportunity to work together in advance helps establish familiarity, improve communication, and identify areas that may need additional attention.

We are especially grateful to the organizations that helped make Tuesday’s exercise possible:

🔹 Camp Kenwood – Wisconsin Farmers Union
🔹 Riteway Bus
🔹 Eau Claire Transit
🔹 Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District
🔹 NorthStar Middle School – Eau Claire
🔹 Kwik Trip – Melby Street, Eau Claire
🔹 Chippewa Falls Police Department Alumni Association

We appreciate everyone who gave their time, personnel, facilities, equipment, and resources to support this training.

While we hope these skills are never needed during a real incident, being prepared before an emergency happens is one of the most important things we can do. Exercises such as today’s help ensure that when the call comes, the people and resources needed to respond are ready to work together.

Thank you to all of our regional partners for helping us prepare today for the possibility of protecting a child tomorrow. 💙
