In Memoriam: Chief Emeritus Raymond "Jim" McCall

It is with deep sadness that Christiana Fire Company, together with the McCall family, announces the passing of Chief Emeritus Raymond "Jim" McCall early on the morning of Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Jim joined Christiana Fire Company in 1959 and served as Chief for four separate terms, totaling 14 years. He also served the Company as Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, Assistant Engineer, and Director.

Beyond Christiana, Jim was a respected fire service leader throughout the state and region. He served as President of the New Castle County Volunteer Firefighters Association in 1970 and as President of the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association in 1979.

For decades, Jim was a fixture of our Company. His service was deeply rooted in his love and respect for his family, his community, and the fire service. His fire service legacy and his contributions to Christiana Fire Company will never be forgotten.

Jim leaves behind his loving wife, Pat; his daughters, Vickie (Billy) and Cindy; and his son, Jim (Chrissy).

Services are being planned. Information will be shared with the fire service community through Christiana Fire Company as it becomes available.

The McCall family and Christiana Fire Company thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Christiana Rookie School #19

This weekend, Christiana hosted its 19th Rookie School. This program introduces new members to the company and is a requirement for those joining as volunteers or as newly hired career Firefighter/EMTs.

The weekend kicked off Friday evening with classroom instruction covering operational expectations, Christiana’s firehouse culture, and New Castle County policies and procedures.

Saturday shifted to hands-on training, with members rotating through several practical skill stations, including:

• Stretching and flowing attack lines
• Forcible entry
• Search techniques
• Ground ladders
• Introduction to vehicle extrication

Sunday concluded the weekend with box alarm scenarios, giving members an opportunity to put the weekend’s instruction into practice. Each group rotated through assignments as the first-due engine, first-due ladder, and second-due ladder, reinforcing the responsibilities and expectations associated with each arriving company.

We pack a lot into these weekends. Rookie School is designed to introduce new members to the fundamentals of how Christiana operates and, more importantly, what this company expects from its membership. From here, members will take this baseline of training and continue building upon it throughout their careers at Christiana. Successful completion of Rookie School allows members to begin being cleared for specific riding assignments as they continue their training and development.

Saturday’s skill stations were also carefully supervised by Acting Battalion Chief “Remi” 🐾, who ensured operations remained up to standard.

Thank you to everyone who attended, instructed, assisted, and devoted part of their holiday weekend to training with us. Your time and commitment are what make weekends like this possible.
