As storm season approaches across the San Diego region, I want to remind Chula Vista residents to take a few minutes now to prepare. Make sure your household has an emergency kit, clear leaves and debris from gutters and storm drains, secure outdoor items, and know how to receive emergency updates. Residents can sign up for Alert San Diego to receive important phone, text, and email notifications about severe weather, flooding, road closures, and other emergencies. Visit https://www.alertsandiego.org/en-us.html for more information and additional preparedness resources.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Behind that statistic are our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, neighbors and loved ones. As someone whose own mother is a breast cancer survivor, this issue is especially personal to me. Breast cancer is an issue our community faces yearlong. This month is a reminder that screenings and early detection are so important, while staying informed about the risks and possible warning signs. Let’s continue supporting one another while turning awareness into action this month and throughout the year.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a time to honor Native American people, their history, participation in our community, and their legacy of contributions. We recognize that Chula Vista is part of the Kumeyaay's ancestral homeland and work to find ways our community can acknowledge, cooperate, and thrive together. Vista

Today is Clean Air Day, a reminder that small changes can make a meaningful difference in the air we all share. Whenever possible, we encourage residents to walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation.

Chula Vista offers several transportation resources to support cleaner, more accessible travel:

- Chula Vista Community Shuttle: An on-demand service available to residents and visitors in designated areas, improving mobility for older adults and youth.
- Chula Vista Bayfront Shuttle: Free, emissions-free service connecting the shoreline to key destinations.
- MTS Bus and Trolley: Service throughout San Diego County. Youth ages 18 and under may ride free through the Youth Opportunity Pass with a Youth PRONTO card or app.

Choose the option that best fits your needs and help build a cleaner, healthier community.

From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month and recognize the history, traditions, and contributions that continue to shape our community.

Here in Chula Vista, our Hispanic and Latino heritage is deeply connected to our binational identity and reflected in the families, businesses, organizations, and traditions that make our city so special.

This year’s theme, Unidos, Somos Más — Together, We Are More — reminds us of the strength we share through our culture, heritage, and community.

I was happy to join Southwestern College in celebrating the opening of its new transit center along Otay Lakes Road.

The new location moves buses away from a main campus roadway and provides a dedicated area for transit passenger drop-off and pickup, making transportation safer and more convenient. Congratulations to Southwestern College on this important addition to the Chula Vista campus!

Today is California Native American Heritage Day, a time to honor the history, culture, resilience, and contributions of Native communities across California. They are part of our community today and will continue shaping our shared future.

Here in Chula Vista, we've taken an intentional step to honor that history: naming District 1's Kumeyaay Park, located at 700 Buena Vista Way, in recognition of the deep roots the Kumeyaay people hold in this land. They have called the Cali-Baja region home for generations and continue to strengthen and shape our community today.

I joined the BIA San Diego for their The Next Horizon event to discuss our growing community's needs and the unique character of the Cali-Baja region.

I’m excited about the projects coming to our community, from the new Fire Station 11 and future university to the state’s first Fuels Mitigation and Hand Crew team and the Otay Mesa East Border Crossing. These investments will strengthen our infrastructure, improve public safety, and create new opportunities for residents.

I appreciated the opportunity to participate in this conversation and share my perspective on preparing Chula Vista for its next chapter.

Had a great time at Taste of Eastlake, hosted by the EastLake Educational Foundation! Spent the evening connecting with local business owners, educators, and neighbors, all while supporting a great cause: 100% of proceeds go directly toward technology and innovation in our Eastlake K–12 public schools.
Thank you to the Foundation and everyone who made it happen!
