The New Republic team recently toured the nearly completed Gloria’s Place project in Over-the-Rhine — a 44-unit permanent supportive housing community developed and managed by Over-the-Rhine Community Housing and built by Model Construction.
Beyond seeing the progress firsthand, the tour sparked a great conversation about how construction challenges are solved collaboratively in the field. During construction, it was discovered that the specified engineered stone product was manufactured on a metric module while the adjacent brick masonry followed a standard imperial module. To align the coursing where the materials transitioned, the team designed custom-height cast stone water tables that created a clean, intentional transition between the two systems.
As a teaching studio, moments like these are invaluable for sharing knowledge, problem-solving strategies, and lessons learned between the design and construction teams.

Homeless service providers ask to borrow city, county money due to expected federal grant delays The organizations that provide services say they can cover about half the funding for five months; they want to borrow the other half from the city and Hamilton County.
Earlier today, our executive director, Mary Burke Rivers, joined leaders representing 11 local organizations serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness to speak before Cincinnati City Council’s Budget, Finance & Governance Committee.
Together, they voiced support for a proposed bridge loan that would temporarily fund Continuum of Care (CoC) programs if federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is delayed beyond July 1, 2026, as anticipated. If approved, the funding would help ensure critical housing and support services continue uninterrupted for up to five months until the promised federal dollars are received.
In her remarks, Mary expressed both frustration and gratitude for the collaborative work of community partners and city leaders:
“While I am angry that so many people in Greater Cincinnati experience homelessness, that so many families experience homelessness, that Cincinnati Public Schools students are sleeping in their cars, that there is enough wealth in our community that no one should experience long-term homelessness, I am grateful that we have worked collectively to bridge this funding gap. I am grateful that those who have access to housing and support through the Continuum of Care will hold on to their homes and will continue to receive support.”
Although momentum is moving in the right direction, the motion will go before City Council this Thursday for final approval. Stay tuned!

Too often, families are forced to make a choice between keeping a roof over their heads and staying together with the animals they love. At OTR Community Housing, we recognize how difficult it can be to find safe, affordable housing that also welcomes pets. That’s why in 2023 we implemented a pet-inclusive policy across all of our properties, allowing residents to register up to two pets per household.🐾
For many people, pets provide comfort, companionship and emotional support, especially during stressful or uncertain times. Expanding access to pet-inclusive affordable housing not only helps keep families together, but can also reduce pet surrenders at local shelters already facing overwhelming demand.
As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re reminded that an important part of mental wellness is having a safe, stable home for every member of the family, including those with fur and feathers!
