October 19, 1964: The Groesbeck Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Western Home Cabinet Center on Colerain Avenue.

Captain Leroy Hammit and Firefighter Bruce Price died in the line of duty when the building collapsed. The owner’s son, Michael Hausfeld, also died as a result of the collapse. Today we remember the victims of this tragic event.

This morning we spoke to Bob Herzog with LOCAL 12, WKRC-TV about the hazards of throwing lithium-ion batteries in the trash. We have partnered with Rumpke Waste & Recycling and Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub to prevent fires by keeping batteries out of the bin.

So far Colerain Dept. of Fire and EMS has collected 3,000+ pounds of lithium-ion batteries during its 3-year partnership! Residents can turn in dead or damaged batteries for FREE to Fire Stations 102 and 25.

UPDATE (9:42 p.m.)
Colerain Township Dept. of Fire and EMS was dispatched just before 8 p.m. for a report of smoke coming from the area near Clippard Instruments. Upon arrival, crews did find an active fire at the rear of the building and upgraded the emergency to a two-alarm fire, per county guidelines for a commercial structure.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries. Fire investigators are still looking into what caused the fire.

Mutual aid from several area departments contributed, including Green Township, North College Hill, City of Cincinnati, Cheviot, Glendale, St. Bernard, Springfield Township, and Forest Park.

Colerain Ave remains closed in both direction for at least another hour, but we will continue to provide updates here on our social media.

Colerain Ave. between Banning and Galbraith is CLOSED as we respond to a two alarm fire. The fire is currently under control, but Colerain Ave will remained closed for at least an hour. Please find an alternate route.

We had a great turnout for fire recruit Family Day last week!

Families got to see first-hand with their sons and daughters will encounter as a firefighter on shift with Colerain Department of Fire and EMS. This also allows us to meet the support people behind our first responders, and thank them for sharing their loved ones with us.

After meeting all of the mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins, grandparents and friends - let's just say the future is bright for Colerain Fire and EMS!

Cue the slow tunes... 🎶

This week, we're featuring a lover of R&B music, a dedicated community mentor, and a firefighter who is passionate about serving others.

Evan Massey, Station 25, has been a firefighter/paramedic for 2½ years. Before joining our department, Evan proudly served with Delhi Township.

Why did you want to become a firefighter/EMT?
"Wanting to serve a community with the gifts I have been blessed with."

When he's not on shift, Evan enjoys working out and investing in the next generation by leading a Christian mentorship program at West High School and Dater High School.

What about family?
Evan's family is a big part of his life. He stays close with his mom, dad, and older brother, who are very involved and supportive.

It's almost that time of year again!

The annual Colerain Township Give Back Day is coming up on Saturday, November 21. Gather a team or join an existing one as we band together and help neighbors in need. Together, with People Working Cooperatively, we will be cleaning up yards and making repairs for Colerain Township residents who are veterans, disabled, or facing a hardship.
