🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 7
History Can Teach Us: The Marshall Fire

On December 30, 2021, the Marshall Fire erupted in Colorado.

Fueled by powerful winds and extremely dry conditions, the fire spread rapidly through suburban communities. Thousands of structures were destroyed, and two people lost their lives.

The Marshall Fire is a reminder that today’s fire threat isn’t limited to forests or rural areas. Wildfire can move into populated neighborhoods with frightening speed.

🏠 WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Create a defensible space around your home.
• Keep leaves and debris away from structures.
• Know multiple ways out of your neighborhood.
• Sign up for emergency alerts.
• Have an evacuation plan BEFORE you need one.

🔥 Fire Prevention Week may end today—but fire safety doesn’t.

Take what we’ve learned this week and put it into practice at home.

History can teach us. Let’s make sure it doesn’t have to teach us the same lesson twice.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 6
History Can Teach Us: The Camp Fire

On November 8, 2018, the Camp Fire swept through Northern California.

Driven by extremely dry conditions and strong winds, the fire moved rapidly and destroyed entire neighborhoods. 85 people lost their lives, making it the deadliest wildfire in the United States in more than a century.

The Camp Fire showed how quickly a wildfire can turn into an evacuation emergency.

🔥 WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Know your evacuation routes.
• Have a plan for pets and family members.
• Keep important items ready to go.
• Pay attention to emergency alerts.
• Don’t wait until the last minute to evacuate.

🚨 If you’re told to evacuate, don’t wait to see how close the fire gets. Leave.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 5
History Can Teach Us: The Ghost Ship Fire

On December 2, 2016, a fire tore through the Ghost Ship warehouse in Oakland, California, during a concert.

The building had been converted into a living and event space, and numerous hazards made escape extremely difficult. 36 people lost their lives.

The tragedy is a reminder that a building’s appearance doesn’t tell you whether it’s safe in an emergency.

🚪 WHAT CAN YOU DO?

When you’re somewhere unfamiliar:
• Know where the exits are.
• Keep escape routes clear.
• Never block or wedge open required exit doors.
• Take fire alarms seriously.
• If something doesn’t look safe, trust your instincts.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 4
History Can Teach Us: The Oakland Hills Firestorm

On October 20, 1991, a wildfire erupted in the Oakland Hills of California.

Strong winds and extremely dry conditions helped the fire spread rapidly through residential neighborhoods. Thousands of homes were destroyed, and 25 people lost their lives.

The Oakland Hills Firestorm showed that wildfires aren’t just a problem for remote forests. Fire can threaten entire neighborhoods.

🏠 WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Keep leaves and other combustibles away from your home.
• Maintain your property and landscaping.
• Have an evacuation plan.
• Know more than one way out of your neighborhood.
• If officials order an evacuation, leave.

🔥 When wildfire conditions are right, waiting until you can see the fire may be waiting too long.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 3
History Can Teach Us: The Station Nightclub

On February 20, 2003, a fire broke out during a concert at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island.

Pyrotechnics ignited foam around the stage, and the fire spread extremely quickly. Within about a minute, smoke was visible at exit doors. 100 people lost their lives.

The fire demonstrated just how quickly conditions can become unsurvivable—and how important it is to have multiple, accessible ways out.

🚪 WHAT CAN YOU DO?

When you enter a public building:
• Know where the exits are.
• Don’t block doors or aisles.
• Take alarms seriously.
• If you see smoke or fire, leave immediately.

🔥 Don’t wait until you see flames to decide how you’re getting out.
