Jeff Smith is an advocate in Legal Aid's Income, Work & Health practice group. He works with clients to resolve benefits issues, seal or expunge records, and remove critical barriers to employment and housing.

In a recent case, a client had a premature birth at 22 weeks, and her child had required an extended NICU stay that cost thousands of dollars. However, she was denied Medicaid coverage for herself and for her child.

Jeff represented the client at an appeal hearing. As a result of his advocacy, the decision was reversed and the client received 10 months of retroactive Medicaid coverage. This paid over $83,000 in medical debts from the child's NICU stay. "Medicaid rules can be complex," shared Jeff. "I help clients navigate those complexities to receive the essential services they need."
