The James Clark Family Left Their Mark on Anderson Township

Anderson Township was home to many ordinary people who were veterans of the Revolutionary War. Among that number is James Clark (b.1765), a settler who brought his family to the Anderson Township area in the late 1700s. Throughout the 700-mile trek from Virginia with his wife, Susanna, and children, James kept a diary describing their route and hardships. The diary shares the challenges and sacrifices faced by those who ventured west, seeking to prosper on the frontier of Ohio.

A standing reminder of the era in which he lived is their home, the James Clark Stone House at the intersection of Clough Pike and Hunley Road. It is thought to be one of the oldest stone houses in Ohio.

Earthquake Awareness!

While Ohio doesn’t experience earthquakes on a large scale, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Geological Survey reports that the state has experienced over 25 since 2017.

As a safety practice for Ohio residents, FEMA, the Ohio EMA and the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium remind folks to stay ready for earthquakes and other natural disasters through a safety event called The Great Shakeout. This earthquake drill is scheduled for 10:15 a.m., today, Thursday, Oct. 15.

During the ShakeOut drill, practice the safest response to an earthquake:

• DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if it’s nearby. For individuals with mobility issues, lock the wheels of your wheelchair or stay seated, and bend over.
• COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter. If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall, away from windows.
• HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If you are under a table or desk for shelter, hold onto it with one hand and be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts.

Earthquake preparedness information and resources are available at www.shakeout.org/centralus/.

Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills help people in homes, schools, and organizations worldwide improve preparedness and practice how to be safe during earthquakes. Register to participate in your state or country's drill at www.ShakeOut.org.

Deer-breeding Season Means More Deer on the Move

Did you know … most deer-vehicle collisions occur between October and December, during the deer-breeding season. On average each year in Anderson Township, about 40% of the nearly 40 reported deer strike accidents each year occur during October and November.

According to data from the State Departments of Public Safety and Natural Resources, peak hours for these collisions are the hours prior to dawn and dusk (typically 6-7 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.).

Motorists are advised to slow down and exercise caution to reduce the likelihood of encounters with deer along roadways, and to be aware of the following warning signs:

• When you see one deer cross the road, look for a second or third deer to follow, as deer typically travel in family groups
• Don’t swerve or drive into something else to avoid hitting a deer – often this creates an even greater risk of injury. Try to brake as much as possible and stay on the roadway.
• If you spot deer ahead, slow down immediately and honk your horn.

Also, we’ve recently seen rear-end collisions when a vehicle brakes to avoid a deer, so please ensure even more space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Storm Sewers Not Made for Leaves

A reminder from the Public Works Department in Anderson Township: Please do not blow or stack your leaves on sidewalks or in the roadway. Leaves can pack the storm sewer system and cause flooding or property damage when the water backs up.

Which drains are storm drains? Storm drains are visible from the street. They are designed to route rain runoff into large pipes that lead directly to major ditches and waterways. Please make sure that nothing but rainwater flows from your yard into storm drains.

From Car Lots to Restaurants… Anderson Township Changes

Our ongoing trip down memory lane from the 1990s has touched upon a couple of large automobile sales lots, including the former Chevrolet/Isuzu site by the Anderson Towne Center, and Subaru/VW near Nagel Road.

Another one in this neck of the woods was the former Thompson MacConnell Cadillac, located on the southwest corner of Beechmont Avenue and Witt Road, as seen in this early 1990s photo. In the background you may be able to make out the sign for Long John Silvers.

Today this site is home to Dewey’s, Coldwell Banker and Chicken Salad Chick.
