Are you ready for Pumpkin Show?

I've been asked that question almost every day since October 1. Honestly, the best answer is that this community has been getting ready for 366 days. The Pumpkin Show Committee, the volunteers, the clubs, churches, and teams, our city crews and safety forces, and the farm families growing those giant pumpkins have been working on this since the last Show ended. Most of it happens where nobody sees it, in meetings, on tractors, at kitchen tables, and in garages. So yes, we're ready. Thank you to every person who put in the work.

I've loved this week for as long as I can remember, but my first real Pumpkin Show experience was as sophomore class president at OCU, running our old dream pie booth. If you've ever worked a booth at the Show, you know it's long hours, a line that never ends, and a great group of people working beside you. I wouldn't trade it. That's when I learned the Show doesn't happen because somebody plans it. It happens because people show up.

To me, the Show is family, friends, and community. It's the one week when everybody comes home. You walk down Court Street and run into people you haven't seen in a year, and somebody always says "we have to get together," and this time you actually do.

This is the 119th Show, reportedly Ohio's oldest festival. A town of about 14,000 people welcomes around 100,000 visitors a day. The Show is free, and we like it that way.

It starts with our farm families, too. Over 100,000 pounds of pumpkins, squash, and gourds will be on display, and last year's biggest weighed 1,972 pounds. If you know a Pickaway County grower, tell them thanks.

It's good for our local businesses as well. Our restaurants, shops, and vendors have one of their busiest weeks, and a lot of first-time visitors end up coming back.

This year we're also celebrating America's 250th, and we're starting with a special parade Tuesday evening.

The Show is open 10 to 10, Wednesday through Saturday. Grab your family, call your friends, and if you see a booth with a long line and a tired volunteer, be kind and buy a pie.

Can't make it downtown? Visit pumpkinshow.com for the full schedule and live stream links, or watch on CGTV on YouTube.

See you downtown🧡

Today, I had the privilege to present a Proclamation to the Pickaway Plains Daughters of the American Revolution during the dedication of a Liberty Tree at Mount Oval just outside town.

This Liberty tree was planted in commemoration of America250 and the 100tb anniversary of the Pickaway Plains DAR Chapter.

The picture doesn’t capture the beauty of this tree with the rolling plains behind it.

There are certain moments in your life that you remember exactly where you were when they happened.

September 11, 2001, is one of those days for me.
I was a sophomore sitting in biology class when the announcement came over the intercom. Then the televisions came on throughout the school.

I'll be honest. At that age, I didn't really understand what the World Trade Center was. I didn't understand the magnitude of what was happening. I just knew something terrible had happened.

And that's why today matters.

Not one student standing here today has a personal memory of September 11, 2001.

For you, it's history.

For those of us who lived through it, it's a memory.

But you don't have to remember that day to remember the people.

Remember the firefighters who climbed those stairs.

The police officers and EMTs who ran toward danger.

The people who went to work that morning and never came home. And the families whose lives were changed forever.

But also remember what happened afterward.

People came together. Neighbors helped neighbors.

People lined up to give blood. Flags were everywhere.

For a little while, we remembered what we had in common.

September 11 showed us what people can do to one another.

But it also showed us what people can do for one another.

And that's what I hope you remember today.

Those firefighters didn't know what was waiting for them at the top.

They just knew somebody needed them.

And they went.

Today, we climb for those who didn't get to come home. We climb for their families. We climb to honor their courage and sacrifice.

And we climb so another generation will know their story.

We remember them.

We honor them.

And we will never forget.

God bless our first responders, our community, and the United States of America.

- My speech from today’s event. Thank you Katie Logan-Hedges, Circleville City School District, City of Circleville, The Circleville Fire Department, OhioHealth and the rest of our community partners.

Happy 250th! 🇺🇸

The American Creed

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

–Written 1917, accepted by the United States House of Representatives on April 3, 1918.

I’m disappointed and frustrated with how this played out.

We’ve been hearing from residents for a long time now, find ways to bring in revenue without putting more on taxpayers. All this while there’s a real conversation happening across Ohio about eliminating property taxes. Whether that happens or not, it’s a reminder that local governments have to be ahead of the game and prepared to adapt.

Because whether it’s a household, a business, or a city, you don’t wait until the last minute and react. You plan ahead. You diversify. You try to prepare for what’s coming, not just what’s happening today.

The administration and some members of Council did the work on this. It was researched. It was talked through. We listened. We took our time and didn’t rush it.

Too much time.

Another community made a decision, and now that revenue is going there instead of coming here.

This isn’t about where anyone personally stands on cannabis. People will disagree on that. This is a legal, taxable industry, and the tax is paid only by those who choose to participate. Those dollars could have stayed here to support our local government.

Now there will be a dispensary in the township immediately surrounding the city. My hope is that we realize we can’t keep watching opportunities leave and expect different results.

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — The City of Circleville has officially lost a high-stakes race for retail cannabis revenue. Following years of City Council gridlock and extended moratoriums, medical and recreational cannabis operator Pure Ohio Wellness, LLC has bypassed city limits entirely, securing a perma

Today, we celebrate Flag Day and the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in 1777.

As we prepare to mark America's 250th birthday, our flag reminds us of where we've been, what we’ve overcome, and the freedoms that make our country so special.

Take a moment today to reflect on the values that bring us together and the pride we share in being Americans. It’s so easy to focus on the things that divide us and lose sight of how blessed we look to others around the world.

🇺🇸 Happy Flag Day, Circleville! 🇺🇸
