The Citrus Heights Police Department joins the California Highway Patrol and law enforcement agencies across the state in mourning the line-of-duty death of CHP Officer Brian Liles.

Electric bikes, scooters, and motorcycles are becoming increasingly common in our community. While they may look similar, each type of vehicle has different laws and requirements.

Here’s a quick look at some important safety and legal information:

E-Bicycles
• Riders must wear a helmet.
• Class 1 and Class 2 e-bicycles generally follow the same regulations as traditional bicycles.
• Class 3 e-bicycles are restricted to riders 16 years and older.
• E-bicycles must display a sticker identifying their class.
• A red reflector or red light is required on the rear.

E-Scooters
• Riders under 18 must wear a helmet.
• A valid driver's license or instruction permit is required.
• Passengers are not permitted.
• Riding on sidewalks is prohibited.
• The maximum speed is 15 MPH.
• E-scooters may not be operated on roads with speed limits over 25 MPH unless permitted in a Class II or Class IV bikeway.

E-Motorcycles
• E-motorcycles are different from e-bicycles and e-scooters and are subject to motor vehicle laws.
• They are prohibited from being operated on city streets or trails when they do not meet applicable vehicle requirements.
• Riders may be subject to enforcement for violations involving registration, licensing, or operation.
• Parents may also face citations for allowing minors to operate certain vehicles unlawfully.

The bottom line: Before you ride, know what you're riding, understand the laws that apply to it, and make safety a priority.

The more you know, the safer you go.
