Elkhorn Search & Rescue Elkhorn Search & Rescue is a volunteer search and rescue group under the direction of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Montana.

Elkhorn Search and Rescue was called out on May 7, 2026, at 1720 hours for a 73-year-old male who had gone for a short walk with his dog and failed to meet up with his friend. He was last seen at approximately 1400 hours in the Moose Creek area of the Elkhorn Mountains.
SAR members responded quickly and searched through the night, trackers determined his direction of travel was down the Crow Creek drainage. Despite extensive overnight efforts, he was not located by daylight.
Due to personnel being deployed overnight, Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue and Broadwater County Search and Rescue assisted in continuing operations. Aviation resources, including the Montana National Guard and Life Flight, were utilized during the search.
The subject was ultimately located after he emerged on the Broadwater side of Crow Creek.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue, Broadwater County Search and Rescue, the U.S. Forest Service, the Montana National Guard, Life Flight, and Jefferson County Dispatch for their invaluable assistance and coordination.

[Monday, 2/9/26] Once again, we want to stress how grateful we are for the relationships we have with our partner agencies. Last Friday the 6th, we received notice that an individual had rolled their off-road vehicle in an isolated part of northern Jefferson County. Without the help of Elkhorn Search & Rescue, law enforcement from the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest/Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and St. Peter's Ambulance, the individual may not have survived the incident. While the victim was dressed for the weather, prolonged exposure and injury complicated rescue efforts. A huge thanks to all who took part.
