On Saturday, August 8, Clanton Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 involving a vehicle that left the roadway, traveled down a steep embankment, and came to rest overturned in a creek beneath a bridge.
Due to the difficult terrain and location of the vehicle, crews established a technical rope-rescue system from the interstate. Rescuers descended to the vehicle, assessed the lone occupant, and secured the patient in a rescue harness. The patient and a rescuer were then safely lifted back to the interstate, where medical personnel were waiting.
The patient suffered minor injuries and was transported by Regional Paramedical Services to the UAB Emergency Department for further evaluation.
This successful operation required close coordination among Clanton Fire Department, Gap of the Mountain Fire Department, Union Grove Fire Department, Chilton County EMA, the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office, Clanton Police Department, and Regional Paramedical Services.
We appreciate the teamwork and professionalism shown by every agency involved. We also thank the motorists who slowed down and gave emergency personnel room to work during this extended operation.
