Mentorship matters, and strong communities invest in their young people.

The Clare County Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to Mentors in the Mitten to support the continued growth and expansion of its Lunch Buddies program. The program connects students with positive role models, helping young people build confidence, develop meaningful relationships, and feel supported at school.

“Our growth and expansion over the past three years has been nationally recognized. We have grown by more than 2,000%, and the investments in our youth made by local foundations and businesses across each of the five counties we serve have been critical to our success. We are truly a community-owned program, and we are honored every time the community invests in our work.”

— Jeff Calhoun, Executive Director, Mentors in the Mitten

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Allen, former Director of the Clare County Community Foundation and a devoted champion for the Clare community.

Jim was the kind of leader whose impact could be seen everywhere, even if he rarely sought recognition for it himself. A quiet, gentle, and humble presence, Jim spent decades helping Clare grow, strengthening organizations, and bringing people together around ideas that could improve his community.

His influence touched nearly every corner of Clare. Jim was considered the father of the Clare Downtown Development Authority and played an important role in strengthening the Industrial Development Corporation and Local Development Finance Authority. He helped build the relationship between Clare and the Middle Michigan Development Corporation, served as a city commissioner, helped guide the Clare Community Foundation, and was instrumental in efforts that shaped the community's library, hospital campus, downtown, and local businesses.

He was also a proud member of the Clare Rotary Club and, above all, someone who deeply loved the place he called home.

Those who knew Jim understood that when he believed something would be good for Clare, he supported it, promoted it, and found a way to help make it happen. And when the work was done, he was often the first person to downplay the role he had played.

That humility was part of what made Jim so special.

Communities are shaped by people who are willing to quietly give their time, wisdom, and energy to something larger than themselves. Clare is a stronger community because Jim Allen chose to do exactly that.

We are grateful for his leadership, his service, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Judy, and all of Jim's family and friends, and with the many people whose lives were touched by his kindness and dedication.

Thank you, Jim, for loving Clare County so well.

In 2024, the Clare County Community Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Mid Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters, helping strengthen school-based mentoring in Clare County at a critical moment for the organization and the children and schools it serves.

“First of all, it’s not a small part for us. That $10,000 grant was massive,” said Jeff Calhoun, Executive Director of Mid Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The grant supported the organization’s school-based mentoring work in Clare County, helping launch and grow programs in Farwell and Clare. It came during a period of significant transformation for the agency. When Jeff stepped into leadership in August 2023, the organization was facing an uncertain future.

“The quick version of this story is when I started in August of 2023, our agency was at risk,” Jeff said.

At that time, the agency had just 14 active matches across five counties. There were no school partnerships in place. Jeff, who had personally been a Big Brother for 34 years, knew the work mattered deeply. He also knew that rural students needed more access to positive relationships, leadership opportunities, and consistent support.

“These kids in these rural areas, they need a lift,” Jeff said.

That belief became the foundation for a new model. Rather than focusing on traditional community-based matches, the organization shifted toward school-based mentoring. Schools became the center of the work because, in rural communities, they are often the central place where students gather, connect, and receive support.

The approach was simple and intentional: partner directly with schools, identify local needs, and create mentoring relationships that could thrive inside the school day. High school students are matched with elementary students, creating a model that supports both groups. Younger students gain a mentor, role model, and friend. Older students gain purpose, leadership experience, and a meaningful way to serve their community.

The results have been remarkable.

By the end of the school year, the agency had grown from 14 matches to 321 matches across its full service area, with more than 11,500 hours of mentoring. Jeff said 77% of those matches are between high school students and elementary students.

In Clare County specifically, the growth has been especially meaningful. In 2023, the organization had three matches in the county. With support from partners like the Clare County Community Foundation, that number has grown to approximately 63, with partnerships in Farwell Area Schools and Clare Public Schools. The organization is also looking ahead to Harrison, with a goal of serving 100 children in Clare County within the next year.

The 2024 grant helped make that growth possible.

“That money went directly to helping us launch and grow the program in Farwell, and then launch the program this year in earnest in Clare,” Jeff said.

In Farwell, the program began small. Jeff recalled that early conversations required trust, patience, and a clear promise that the program would not create extra work for already busy school staff. Over time, that trust grew. What started with a handful of matches expanded to more than 30 in the past year. Now, high school students are encouraging their friends to participate.

For local nonprofits, grantmaking often provides the flexible, catalytic support needed to turn a promising idea into a sustainable program. In this case, the Foundation’s grant helped Mid Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters meet real needs in Clare County schools while building a model designed to use resources efficiently.

Jeff said the organization is now serving students at a cost of under $800 per match per year, far below the national average. That efficiency matters because, as the program grows, so does the need for support.

“In our business, the more matches we make, the more money I have to go raise,” Jeff said.

That is where local philanthropy makes a direct difference. A grant to a nonprofit is more than a line item. It can mean a student has someone to sit with, talk with, learn from, and look forward to seeing. It can mean a high school student discovers the power of leadership and service. It can mean a rural school gains a partner committed to showing up for its students.

For Jeff, the work is personal. It is also rooted in a clear belief that every available dollar should be used to help children.

“I am about every cent going to help a kid,” Jeff said. “And we’re about as close as you can get to that.”

Through its 2024 grant to Mid Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Clare County Community Foundation helped strengthen a program that builds relationships, supports schools, and creates new possibilities for young people across Clare County. As the Foundation reflects on this impact in its 2025 annual report, the story is a reminder of what local grantmaking makes possible: nonprofits gaining momentum, schools gaining partners, and children gaining mentors who help them see a brighter future.

A Celebration of Clare County’s Future

Earlier this month, we had the honor of celebrating graduating high school seniors from throughout Clare County who are receiving scholarships through the Clare County Community Foundation.

This event was more than a recognition of academic achievement. It was a celebration of the power of community giving and the people who continue to invest in the next generation of Clare County leaders.

Each year, the Foundation annually awards over $60,000 in scholarships in partnership with local donors and high schools. Every scholarship represents someone choosing to give back, support local students, and help build a stronger future for Clare County.

Scholarships are only one part of this work. Each year, the Foundation also supports local organizations and projects through grants that strengthen communities, spark creativity, support innovation, and meet real needs across Clare County.

Thank you to the donors, partners, schools, families, and volunteers who make this work possible. Your generosity helps open doors for students and creates a lasting impact throughout Clare County.

We had a great time joining Mid Michigan College for their first Coffee & Construction event, and what an incredible opportunity it was to see the future taking shape right in our region.

From getting a firsthand look at the new nursing and welding labs to connecting with partners who share a commitment to workforce development, the experience was a powerful reminder of why these investments matter. These spaces aren’t just buildings. They’re pathways for students across Clare County to gain skills, build careers, and stay rooted in our communities.

At the Clare County Community Foundation, we’re proud to support projects that strengthen education, expand opportunity, and create long-term impact. Seeing this work up close reinforces just how meaningful that impact can be.

We’re grateful to Mid Michigan College for the invitation and look forward to continuing this partnership as these projects come to life.

Grant Impact Story

A recent grant from the Clare County Community Foundation is helping Clare Youth Football invest in the safety and development of young athletes across the Clare area.

The grant supports the purchase of new football helmets and shoulder pads, ensuring players have access to safe, up-to-date equipment as they learn the fundamentals of the game. Youth sports programs like Clare Youth Football do more than teach athletic skills. They also help build teamwork, leadership, and a sense of community pride that extends far beyond the field.

“Thank you for funding safe, updated equipment. This grant protects our athletes while strengthening teamwork, leadership, and community pride throughout the Clare area.” - Brad Davis

Investments like this help ensure that Clare County’s young athletes can play, grow, and compete in a safe and supportive environment while building connections that strengthen the entire community.
