🎀Red Ribbon Week, celebrated annually from October 23 to October 31, is the nation’s oldest and largest drug abuse prevention campaign, reaching over 80 million people each year.
The initiative began in 1985 as a grassroots movement to honor Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a DEA Special Agent who was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico. In tribute to his ultimate sacrifice, community members in California wore red satin ribbons to symbolize their commitment to living drug-free lives and fighting illegal drugs. Recognizing the movement's potential, the National Family Partnership organized the first nationwide Red Ribbon Week in 1988 with the endorsement of the U.S. Congress and the Reagan administration.
Today, Red Ribbon Week serves as a powerful catalyst for youth education and community unity. Millions of students, educators, and parents participate each October by wearing red ribbons, signing drug-free pledges, decorating schools, and engaging in interactive prevention activities. Beyond raising awareness about the physical and social dangers of substance abuse, the campaign provides young people with practical skills to resist peer pressure, make healthy choices, and build a safe, drug-free future.
