Crossroads Inc. Our mission is to assist formerly incarcerated women achieve independence. Crossroads, Inc. helps women who have experienced significant hardship.

In 2003, 57% of all women in California’s prisons had been physically or sexually abused prior to incarceration. About 80% suffered from substance abuse problems while 27% received therapy or counseling for mental health issues. A total of 30% received welfare assistance and 64% lived with their children prior to incarceration. Of those 64%, almost half lived in single households. Of all women entering prison in 2003, 87% were convicted of non-violent drug or property crimes.*

Crossroads’ program helps its participants cope with issues faced upon release in an effective and successful manner. Counseling and education are provided in a group setting and include, but are not limited to, substance abuse issues, relapse prevention, anger management, relationships and family life, self-esteem, basic life skills, food preparation (including planning, shopping, and preparing healthy meals), and home management. Women are also taught money management skills: they are required to find employment, open a savings account, and save a minimum of 75% of their income. This program has proved to be extremely effective, as shown by the very high rate of success of our graduates. Crossroads women also participate in a variety of inventive activities such as art, creative writing, and gardening.

Latina women are imprisoned at a rate of 51 per 100,000, compared with 41 per 100,000 for white women. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the traditions, voices, resilience, and contributions of Hispanic and Latina communities. We also recognize the importance of creating opportunities for all women returning home from incarceration to rebuild their lives, reconnect with their communities, and move toward brighter futures. At Crossroads, we believe every woman deserves the opportunity for a second chance.

Earlier this summer we hosted our annual Welcome Home Breakfast. Everyone who attended was fortunate enough to hear from current resident, Lulu. Hear her powerful story:

Hi, my name is Lulu. I am 44 years old and I am a current resident at Crossroads. I have been in the program for 6 months. I am originally from Mexico but moved to the US when I was 8. My family lived in East LA. It was me, my mom, my stepdad, and my younger sister. My mom was always there for me. She would bring me to the bus stop and pick me up from school. I did well in school. When I was 15, I had my quinceanera. At the event I met my boyfriend. At the age of 17 we ended up together and stayed together for 10 years. We had 4 kids: twin girls and two boys.

After we were together awhile, I found out he was using drugs. I told him it was bad and that it wasn’t a good example for our kids. It was hard to leave with 4 kids. Eventually he got arrested and I went to live with my mom and our 4 kids. I couldn’t work because I didn’t have help. Eventually I got a job with my sister packaging vegetables. I was doing well. I was able to get my own apartment for me and my kids. I also got my own car. For about year things were good.

My 30th birthday was coming up and my friends from work wanted to take me out. I was tired from taking care of my kids, working full time and my mom was sick. One of my friends said they had a present for me and I went to the party. When we got to the club my friend handed me som**hing and told me to try it. I had never done drugs and didn’t want to. I told my 1 friend I didn’t want to do it and she kept telling me it would be good for me. This is the first time I smoked m**h.

Things got bad right away. I lost my job from doing drugs, I lost my apartment and my car. I had to go live with my sister. Not long after my mom passed away. I was buying drugs for 20 dollars for a whole week and things got worse and I kept having to buy even more drugs. I noticed I was getting more addicted. I started taking my kids to school late. The school eventually reported me and I lost custody of my kids.

Please support Crossroads’ women by becoming a Breakfast Sponsor!

We rely on the support of our community to do this work. Why does what we do matter? People coming out of incarceration often have limited resources to make the transition to independent living. Our program is provided at no cost. Our supportive environment helps each woman but it also helps each woman’s larger community of family, friends and the places they call home.

We invite you to support Crossroads by becoming a sponsor for our Annual Welcome Home Breakfast. Crossroads needs to ensure the financial sustainability of our programs so we can continue to offer services to women coming out of incarceration in California. Please swipe for details about each level of sponsorship.

We look forward to seeing you at the event and thank you in advance for sponsorsing Crossroads!
