🚔 OPERATION MUFFLER MAYHEM — PHASE 1 RESULTS
You spoke. We listened. Enforcement is underway.
On Wednesday night, September 30, Claremont Police officers conducted Phase 1 of Operation Muffler Mayhem, addressing repeated complaints about loud, intentionally backfiring exhausts, speeding, and reckless driving throughout our city.
These concerns were reinforced by a petition signed by more than 142 community members and presented to the Claremont City Council, Police Commission, and Police Chief.
During just four hours, officers:
• Conducted 29 motor vehicle stops
• Issued 12 citations
• Issued 3 court summonses for Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, and Operating After Suspension
• Arrested 1 person for Disorderly Conduct after allegedly intentionally backfiring a vehicle despite having previously been cited for the same conduct
• Had 6 vehicles towed from city roads
Claremont Police have also begun sending letters to the Director of the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles, requesting the immediate suspension of driving privileges for operators engaging in this conduct.
Vehicles modified to produce unnecessary exhaust backfires can create explosive sounds easily mistaken for gunfire. This behavior disrupts neighborhoods, alarms residents, and creates concerns for public safety. Speeding and reckless driving compound those dangers.
Our message is clear: driving privileges come with responsibilities. Drivers who engage in this conduct should expect continued, focused enforcement.
We thank the residents who brought these concerns forward. We hear you, and we are taking action.
Phase 2 is coming in the VERY near future.

🛑 STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES 🚌

The Claremont Police Department reminds motorists that under NH RSA 265:54, drivers must stop at least 25 feet from a school bus displaying flashing red lights and remain stopped until the lights stop or the bus resumes motion.

⚠️ ⚠️ WASHINGTON STREET ⚠️ ⚠️

Although Washington Street has four lanes — two in each direction — ALL LANES OF TRAFFIC, IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, must stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights.

CURRENT PENALTIES:

• 1st offense: $150 + penalty assessment
• 2nd/subsequent: $250–$1,000 fine and possible 30-day license suspension

🚨 NEW PENALTIES — EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2027:

• 1st: $300 + penalty assessment and 7-day license suspension
• 2nd: Minimum $750 fine and at least 30-day license revocation*
• 3rd+: Minimum $750 fine, mandatory minimum 15 days in jail, and license revoked for at least 1 year

See the red lights. STOP. All lanes. Both directions.

A few seconds of patience can save a child’s life.

*****PRESS RELEASE*****

August 2, 2026

In response to complaints about possible illegal activity at a home on Twistback Road, the Claremont Police Department conducted a focused investigation into narcotics distribution over the past few days. Claremont Police Officers, monitoring the activity of that building, made contacts with people who were coming from the home and developed probable cause that the occupants of the building were possessing and distributing drugs, specifically crack co***ne.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 2, Claremont Police officers, assisted by Deputies from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at 216 Twistback Road and seized a large quantity of suspected co***ne, crack co***ne, fentanyl, US currency and a fi***rm. During the operation, the following subjects were taken into custody:

Three of the four subjects (Redmond, Cutting and Race) were detained at the Sullivan County House of Corrections until their arraignment in the 5th Circuit Court, Claremont District on Monday, August 3, 2026. Woodsum was released on personal recognizance bail, and is expected to appear in the 5th Circuit Court, Claremont District at a later date. We anticipate that additional charges and additional subjects will be arrested as a result of this investigation.

This investigation was supported by the Northern Shield Initiative through the New Hampshire Department of Safety. The Claremont Police Department, and all of our allied law enforcement agencies who collaborate in the Northern Shield Initiative, will aggressively work to interrupt the distribution of dangerous drugs into our community.
