FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Addresses Misinformation Regarding Jail Operations

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is issuing this statement to clarify recent rumors and social media claims alleging that inmates were housed in the Monroe County Jail over the weekend.

Those claims are false.

One detainee was temporarily brought into the Monroe County Jail Wednesday September the 9th while awaiting a scheduled medical appointment that day in Clarendon. The detainee had traveled approximately 1½ hours from the facility where he was being housed and needed access to a restroom while waiting for the appointment.

For safety and security reasons, taking a detainee into a public restroom was not considered an appropriate option. The detainee was therefore permitted to use the secure holding area at the Monroe County Jail. His total time inside the facility was approximately 1½ hours. He was not housed at the Monroe County Jail and did not remain at the facility overnight at any point.

The Sheriff’s Office has consulted with legal counsel and appropriate Arkansas Jail Standards personnel regarding the temporary use of the secure holding area under these circumstances.

The Monroe County Jail remains closed at this time. No inmates or detainees are being housed at the facility, and none will be housed there until the jail has officially reopened and is authorized to resume normal operations.

We understand the public’s interest in the status of the Monroe County Jail and appreciate the community’s patience as we continue working toward reopening the facility.

We also encourage citizens to rely on information released directly by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office regarding jail operations rather than rumors, speculation, or unverified information circulating on social media.

SHERIFF'S ANNOUNCEMENT

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has authorized an own recognizance (OR) release for inmate Lucas Hargrovefacing felony charges, following direct medical orders form his Doctor for extensive, specialized treatment.

The Sheriff's Office fought to the final hour to keep the inmate incarcerated, and thoroughly verified the absolute legitimacy of his illness.

We explored every avenue to maintain custody, but releasing him is the only viable option to protect the hard-working taxpayers of Monroe County from incurring a crippling financial burden for his medical care.

Public safety remains our highest priority. While this individual faces felony charges, we are confident he does not pose a physical threat to the community.

This release is strictly temporary. The inmate is mandated to return to custody immediately upon completing his medical treatment and being healed.
