This is a great time of the year to prepare your 2026 tree plantings for the upcoming winter!
-Putting a little wood mulch around your trees helps with retaining moisture, reducing temperature swing effects and as the mulch breaks down it improves your soil.
-Don't have enough mulch, then focus on your favorite trees. Remember we have rabbit and deer in Clark County and they love to browse on your new trees.
-Tree tubes and some form of cages around your trees help a lot. Focus on your fruit and nut trees first then do what you can for the rest. If some of your trees didn't make it this year, it's a good time to order replacements for next year. Call Kyle at 605-443-8660 extension 3

RCD would like to compile a photographic record of these events, and when and where they were if possible. Any photos of the blowing dust or how those high wind speeds may have affected you as a resident of our counties are appreciated!!

With the dry hot weather this week I figured it was a great time to remind everyone to not forget to water your trees!

NEWLY PLANTED TREES
The most critical watering needs are for the trees that will be planted this spring. These trees do not have a well-developed root system and regardless of whether they are planted bare-root, container or balled-and-burlapped, they will require extra attention to watering this spring and summer. A newly planted seedling needs between a pint and quart of water per day while a newly planted ornamental tree, one about 6 to 8 feet tall, needs about 2 to 3 gallons per day. Ideally this quantity of water is applied daily for the first couple of weeks following planting. The root system of these transplants is fairly small and larger quantities of water may flow away from the tree roots before being absorbed. It is also important to water directly next to the stem during this time period so the water is available to the tree, not the surrounding soil or vegetation.

CLARK AREA PRODUCERS!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Please take a couple minutes and click on the link below to fill out the survey. We would like to hear your feedback on what Clark County producers are seeing locally and what needs to be done to get more out of our resources.

We value your input which will better steer our direction in the county on what kind of resource management we can do for you.

What you’re seeing matters! Created by the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts, this local resource concern survey offers landowners, producers, and community members an opportunity to share conservation concerns, successes, and observations from their area. Once that information is collected, it is sent to local conservation districts and will steer efforts and action items of the local working group. https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sdconservation.org%2Fshare-what-youre-seeing&data=05%7C02%7CKyle.Reeves%40sd.nacdnet.net%7C28aa0ff101ac4f28383b08dee1e66842%7Ced5b36e701ee4ebc867ee03cfa0d4697%7C1%7C0%7C639196576863783670%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=OIjsmm5HfB1sCy%2FuOsdrBb1sznVyECHCV4V2VDZYuXQ%3D&reserved=0
